Still looking for a new battery for my 280i fhc.
Its a 1983 with the cut out for the battery just behind the passenger side wheel arch.
Does anyone know the battery number I need?

Cheers

I've got an NS60 in mine (Hella reference). It's same width as standard 'small' pattern, but a little longer. It's rated at 430 CCA. they come both ways round (i.e +ve and -ve terminals reversed)

If you don't have a moulded 'inset' where the battery fits, then it's tougher to find one with enough CCA (cold cranking amps) for the 2.8 engine, as most small pattern ones can only muster 300 or so, and the 'standard large' one (450 CCA) which I think is the V8 one too, is a little too wide to go in. (V8's and later wedges have the moulded inset in the wing)

It's worth checking/asking the CCA rating for the battery, you need at least a 400CCA, or the engine will be reluctant to turn over, especially when it's frosty....

I Have a mazda battery and although it's small it has 500CA which is more than enough for my 280...Its a bit expensive but when you are limited for space you are also limited in choice...Ziga

Just been checking and the 072 battery is 175mm wide and the old batter (just been found at back of garage!) is 135mm wide and a snug fit.
Its marked PLA 015 but I cant find one anywere.
Is there some were you can buy by size and CCA?

Any ideas welcome

Hi Mate..With batteries they are normally higher in cranking amps the bigger they are and its very difficult to find something small but with lots of power..There are red and yellow top optima and varley red top race batteries but they are not cheap...This is why i went for the MX5 battery, Its small and has high CA...Ziga

I am limited by the space in the GRP only being big enough to fit a 135mm wide battery.
015 size only seems to come in 340 CCA!
Seem to remeber that working for a year or two but higher CCA would be prefered.

When i was searching for a battery i found one that was 45Ah..It was 163mm wide and the bay for the battery was 163mm but then tapered in to 160mm which was a right pain..I have had the MX5 battery for a year now and mine starts with no trouble..Even through last winter which was bloody cold...Yes its nearly 90 sobs but it has a two year warranty and has 500CA which is very high for a small battery...Ziga

Yeah 350 is marginal/too small..... as you say, may be just OK for a year or two.
I read that post above and thought that the 072 was the V8 (wider) case, but not sure. It's confusing 'cos it will probably go in later 280 wedges.

There are guides on the interweb, and pdf formats as well, so you can save the whole battery catalogue (that's where I got mine from, but I didn't save the URL (sorry). Try looking up something like "Hella batteries" or whatever the common make is now in the UK (used to be Lucas and er?). There are ones which show which model for which battery which is useful.

A good electrical/battery place should understand the terms CCA and RC (Cold Cranking Amps and Reserve Capacity) and if they don't, go somewhere else. My local are really good, I even took my tape measure and they let me in the back to measure the cases...

I remember in UK (20 years ago!), they used to do a 'small' battery with 11 plates instead of 9, so higher CCA, but I bet that's not around any more...

Unfortunately I think different countries use different part references ??

I think my battery is from a Jap car too,(like Zig's) but don't know which one, as I did mine by measurement....

You can't really go too big in terms of CCA, it won't burn out the alternator or anything like that, so if battery physically fits and more than 400CCA it's fine.....(at reasonable price of course !!)
