Jeff see big Stewy up the rugby club. Ask him if a lad called Andy Baldwin still gets in. If so he will sort that out for you no problem.

Hi Dix..It does look like its just the lacquer that has cracked..From the position of the damage it kind of ties in with where you would push to open/close the cover, I push mine in the middle and if it was really cold then its possible for it to crack...Get a magnifying glass and have a real close look to see if you can see the crack extending underneath the lacquer..It does look repairable but it will need careful rubbing down as to not destroy or disturb the veneer..ziga

The veneer on my 280i FHC looked very similar to yours. It was only the lacquer that had cracked. I took it to a french polisher who had it looking like new in no time for not an awful lot of money.

I had a similar thing years ago on an old triumph i had, managed to get a blade into the crack and under the varnish and levered it off then used a scraper to chisel off all the old varnish, gave it a light sand and then re varnished and looked great.old varnish goes brittle which is why it cracks but normally easy to prize away.

Nasty edge there !! ....

As far as I know it's standard furniture stuff for veneers, but I don't know anyone who does it here in NZ....mine has a similar crack....and the door handles are terrible, but dash still good.

Hi Mate...There is always the iron on veneer option, You wont be able to buy burr walnut in that option but once lacquered it would look very nice...Or what i did as an alternative was to find a piece of wood that fits and colour it..You could iron on the veneer rather than stripping the original parts..Ziga

Stained and waxed..

Actually to be honest I was thinking of using new wood an simply staining it.
There are some really nice hardwoods here in NZ (Rimu) which isn't all that expensive, and is very, very durable, and doesn't seem to rot even when damp...

one of my handles looks like the wood is separating...

Or even the dreaded leathercloth (only if no other option

Rimu wood sounds interesting..Just read up on it..Its a very slow growing tree and can take 500-600 years to reach maturity..Looks a nice colour with a varied grain..

Dix. Had a rummage in the garage as I kept the old veneer from my SE when I changed them all. It is still in good nick, the size is 375mm x 100mm. Here is piccy:-

You are welcome to it if you want it.

Cheers, David
