Evening All
Would anyone let me know what is the thread size on the ends of the oil pressure pipe that feeds the oil pressure gauge on a 280i (Smiths gauge). Mine split on my very 1st run out back in march yikes and I replaced it with an oil pressure switch linked to a sounder to give me an audible alarm if the pressure drops too low. The plan now is to keep the existing set up incorporating a T piece and add in the gauge back into the system so I can read the pressure but also get a warning buzzer in the event of oil pressure failure. Demon Tweeks do new pipes but I don't know what the thread is??
Also any idea what the easiest way is of accessing the back of the gauge is to remove the old pipe and install the new?? I've had a quick look and it looks like i'll need to be double jointed and have hands the size of a two year old to get in without removing the dash??
Any help gratefully received bow

My system with SW guages has a sender on block, and an electric guage (like fuel guage).

As far as I know the fittings on those Smiths guages/pipes is 1/4 BSP (british standard pipe thread). It is still used in plumbing, and can be found in plumbing shops. Some are tapered some are straight. The guage is straight thread, but block fittings etc are tapered (so they seal - guage has a small fibre sealing ring). You might be able to find new plastic pipe, don't know....

The 2.8 engine block thread is metric I think, so you should have an adaptor (mine has one).

Think you may be correct as i had to remove the adapter to fit the oil pressure warning switch. Demon Tweeks do pipe to your spec so can choose end fittings and length of pipe to suit most applications. Pretty cheap too. http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/gauge-pip...

OOPS - thanks for the link !

I always forget that imperial british pipe threads (and pipe sizes) are the effective INTERNAL diameter of the pipe, and see that the Demon Tweaks site shows 1/8 BSP.

I'm pretty sure metric sizes are external dia...

Anyway they look like the right ones.... and they show the little fibre washer too...

Note that the 'inside' pipe pieces also come in flat, male cone, female cone.
