Turns out someone at some point replaced a diode with a fuse! banghead result - dip beam always lit when lights are on and consequently a main beam that was nigh on indistinguishable from dip. When checking the fuses previously I just replaced the ones which had blown or looked rough, never thought that one should not actually have been there!

If only i had known that 4 hours ago i could have just pulled the fuse out and put the diode in rather than chasing voltages around the car... still, at least its not raining in the garage and its now time for a massive bacon sandwich to celebrate having reattached the relay and fuse boards woohoobiggrin

Man made errors are always the worst to find. Check my 4 pot post. I was the one who made the error thus making it even harder to find. No bacon sarnie for me just a 70cl bottle of Russian/polish winter warmer.

I think it was Einstein who said

"never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetance and stupidity"

I feel this is one of the best quotes ever, it's rare a situation allows for it to be pulled out of the bag biggrin
