Mine virtually fell off yesterday, when I was checking out the brake master cyl... The foam has undergone some sort of wierd reaction and has turned into a sort of coarse dust.
I enede up removing it altoghether, and then had to spend hours cleaning up the hardened glue and foam 'dust' which went everywhere.

Anyone else had this problem ?
Did the later wedges have this liner too ?
how many of you still have the liner fitted ?

I believe it to be vinyl with foam backing and it wasnt essentially heat resistant..more of sound insulation..Over the years it goes hard and becomes un-stuck..Mine was hanging from the middle so i took it off and replaced it with some foil tape..I do have some heat retardant insulation to go back on but havent got round to doing it yet..A friend has found someone that can make them as near to original as you will get even with the TVR logo...Ziga

As Zig has said foam backed which over time rots and turns into dust, i had similar thing when i removed my carpets and found the sound deadening or underlay foam was mush!!

Mine has turned stiff, the bonnet liner that is, and curled up along the edges. That makes it hard to glue back down. It looks too neat to go without.

I've just done a quick and dirty spray paint for now - looks OK.
I wondered about foil for the heat, but I'll see - my wedge is midnight blue anyway so gets pretty hot in the sun...

Yeah mine was hard and curly at the edges too, and refused to reglue, and it was hanging from the middle (where the metal mesh is) for a while.

I noticed also that the throttle had ripped a hole in it too - a bit of a worry for sticky throttles...

hmm.. not seen that problem under carpets that I remember - seen it in old seats though.
Oh well...

Thanks guys.

Did the later V8's have liners too ?

Thats what happened to me mate..And i had a sticky throttle albeit as i was parked..I ended up cutting a hole out of the vinyl above it and putting a small patch of foil tape on there..I eventually got sick of looking at it and it was an embarrassment whenever anyone wanted to see the engine...This is how it looked before..

And this is it now..

Or you could go for a copy of the original..I think they use AF 178 adhesive or similar to glue it..Cheers..Ziga

Wow Zig - that 'before' photo is amazing to me.
Why ?

I took one look at it, and my brain is saying "Oh look, he's got -
the same dent over the brake MC
the same dent over the overflow tank (cap)
the same ripped hole over throttle
the same pattern over the fuel head.

So it must be all 280's which have the same issues... there ain't enough room over the engine !!

(Foil is a neat solution - looks good. I'll probably copy that....)

Hi Mate..Yes i should imagine the same condition of the insulation applies to most 280's..The V8 seems to not have all that damage..Just curly edges and cooked foam..The foil tape is flame retardant but make sure you get all the old crud off and oil as it needs a clean dry surface for good adhesion..(Which you probably know)..Its no good for insulating but creates a nice layer of space where air can move the heat over the engine and out the top section of the bonnet...Try to get wide tape as well..saves a bit of time..Cheers..Ziga

Thanks for the link, Zig.

I found the best way to shift the old glue and foam was with a variable speed drill set to minimum and a rotary wire brush... just aggressive enough, and doesn't damage the fibreglass surface. So I got it all clean in about 3 hours, but had dust everywhere, even with a sheet over the engine bay.

I measured the clearance on mine (after cleaning) by using an old toilet roll cardboard tube as a crush tube, and it shows about 2 inches over the engine airbox ...enough for cooling I reckon.

Make sure you have something on there especially if you have a red car. When it rains the heat transfers to the bonnet and turns the rain water into little white circles just visible and impossible to remove. Thus meaning I could do with a bonnet respray now.

That happened to me when i owned a dark grey rover 216,I took the insulation off in order to replace it but never did..Although it was more like milky patches..Saying that though a while back i put the car away wet with the old insulation under bonnet and in the morning i had a milky patch..T-cut got rid of a bit but since i ripped off the old stuff and put the foil on it and had it sitting with hot sun on it it's gone..Ziga

Thanks for that tip guys, I'll keep an eye on the paintwork, although it's not that flash anyway (needs a good clean up and respray soon)
