just a general moan at my own incompetence and a request for any tips.
1/ fitting a new speedo cable on a 280. how do you get the retaining bolt back on? with the cable in place there isnt the space for my big hands between the chassis and gearbox to fit it. unfortunately my 5 year daughter refused to wriggle under the car frown
2/ finished rewiring the pods, about time too smile however the pods go up when off and down when on!
any tips welcome, dark stopped play today so back on it tomorrow.
cheers , marcus

1. Try bribery... wink

2. Either you have the crank fitted to the motor 180 degrees out or you have crossed over the wiring from the limit switch contacts.

Hope that helps

if BOTH pods work backwards, probably easiest fix is to swop the relay wires over (the relay which does headlamp signal) if you can get at it easily. Otherwise swop over the motor switch contacts (as above)

Gbox... You could undo mount and lower it a bit on a jack - there should be enough movement in the UJs to allow that.... or sometimes masking tape on a spanner to hold the bolt head (assuming there's anough to rotate the spanner)....

Speedo - It's a little b*tchy. My experience is with a 4 speed so a 5 speed might be different. You're need a good light and an 1/4 drive socket set, the socket (5/16?) and various extensions.

Ramp or jack up the right (in your case driver's) side of the car and wiggle under from that side. Get far enough in that you are looking up and back at the connection (on the left side of the tail shaft). As you will be looking up at the underside, safety glasses are recommended as you have road grit (and rust?) dropping in your eyes. The nice thing is when you drop the bolt or bracket it will land on the flat frame plate by the transmission mount. It helps to have a magnetized socket or to put a dab of bearing grease in the socket to hold the bolt.

With a long enough extension set you can just land the bolt/bracket in the hole without getting you hands into the frame. Start by hand. You may have to turn the bolt counter-clockwise a turn or two to get it aligned properly. Slow and gentle helps. Then you can run it in by hand and add the socket handle to tighten.

BTW - while things are apart, you might want to check your speedo gear set. It (gear and bushing) just pop out (with a bit of wiggling/pulling) once the speedo clamp is off. If you need to replace the plastic gear/shaft make sure the shaft turns easily when pushed all the way into the bushing and when pulled out a little (1/4"+/-). Otherwise you will eat the plastic gear in no time. Grady

Thanks for the tips guys. Rain has halted play since saturday back to work tomorrow frown
I'll check the drive as well ( hadn't thought to do that) got a spare one in my shed as well just case.
As to the pods, I think I put the arms on the wrong way as after spending weeks rewiring the front i hope to god i didnt make a stupid mistake when connecting the relays!
hopefully next weekend is dry and i can resume with my tinkering/incompetence!
