Hi

Well I find myself in a problem I have had before!

The thermostat Housing on my FHC project car is broken just like it was on my earlier FHC.
The problem is trying to find a replacment housing (Front and rear!)

The cologne engine in a 280i is unique to TVR. The engine is a commercial unit sold to TVR and has a different housing to the standard Ford Cologne engine.

Now I have to find a replacment,

Help has anybody got one for the 280i?

Andy

The 3-point fixing was a standard shared by various makers, I recall going to the local motor factors and asking for thermostat housing gasket and they just took one off a hook, no make or model needed. On that basis there must be umpteen other engines that could be a donor. The V8 is the same: the standard SD1 etc. 'stat housing has the hose stub at a different angle to that required on a Wedge so the housing was lifted from something else.

No they aren't unique to TVR. The early carb Colognes 2.3 and 2.8 used that housing, so any Granny or Cortina, Pretty sure early 2.8i is the same in Granada. Not sure about Capri.
Later 2.8i did use a different housing with those bolts set at different points around the thermostat, so won't fit.
(as a double check, the bolt holes are equal 120 degree spacing on early housings , or very close, which seems to match your pic)

I beleive there are at least 3 different water pumps for 2.8, and another one (or two) for 2.9, and I think they all have different front and back thermostat housing pairs....plus I think the Sierra had a different angle for the side outlet, but same bolt spacings as later 2.8 (?).

When I order H2O bits (water pump, housings, thermostats, etc) for mine I specify early mk2 Granada 2.3 or 2.8 carb, which seems to work for my wedge engine ...

Why I claimed it was unigue is because the TVR purchased these engine's as commercial industrial units. Trying to find the correct size, angle etc is hard as the most numuerous type is not the TVR design. By what you say it was a carb engine which had the fuel injection system fitted (Only TVR we get these type)

Mark The one you have linked looks like the correct one. I will have to check the pics against my unit! I hope it is the correct type because with out it I will not have a complete engine!

No worries, I was just trying help identify the bits, and I have worked enough with Colognes to confirm which models I know about.... I did a bit with 2.3 Cortinas and Granadas and a few kit cars with various engines (and built a 2.8 Cortina too !)

I guess it's possible that TVR ordered the 'carb front cam cover', or perhaps it's the 'early Granada injection engine' spec. I'm pretty sure all the blocks are the same for ancilliaries bolted to them (even from pre and post 85, black and grey appear to be externally identical). I have even swopped a 2.3 cam cover onto a 2.8 block, and it all fits perfectly.

It's also possible that Ford did to TVR what TVR did to us: fitted whatever bits they could find lying around that they didn't want any more biggrin

All I know it has the rare waterpump, go to any motor factor and they have hell of a job finding the correct pump (Which remind's me we better check that!)

What I know about water pumps.....There are a few different ones !! Hope this helps....

up to 1984 ish...
Very early short nose pump fitted to 2.3 - QH part no GCP980
More common longer nose, fitted to 2.3 and 2.8 - QH part no GCP2101
Long nose with screw thread for viscous fan , fitted to later 2.3 and 2.8 (QH ?)
I think there may be 2 types of viscous fan pumps also, but not sure.
There may be others too...above are the commonly used UK ones

If you can find the matching water pump pulley, ALL these pumps are interchangeable, and they all use the same early thermostat cover (what you are after). These engines use the same cam cover assembly.

My engines (fitted and the spare) both use the 2101 pump, but I have a spare short nose pulley for a 980 pump in my spare bits pile..

Some pulleys had a double fanbelt (Capri 2.8) but I think it still fits the above pumps ?

post 84 ish
Late (grey block) 2.8 has different pumps which are NOT interchangeable - different thermostat cover and cam cover. 2.9 pumps are different again, and don't fit any 2.3 or 2.8

Hi Chris

It's the old story supply and demand,

I need one and they can supply, so I have to pay there price.

Because with out it, my engine will not run for very long!

Plus all my expensive "Evans" coolant will end up on the floor! yikes

Probably this housing...Mine is a bit knackered which reminds me...If it is this part then try to salvage the thermo time switch as they are definitely unobtainable!..Even second hand.

Available at Motomobil..New or used.
