In my search for a Tuscan I came across an S2 and bought it as a rolling restoration project. The only problem is its not rolling anymore. I parked it in my garage and the next morning its failed to start no matter what I did. Long story short I have an electrician coming over at the weekend to sort it, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. The search for the Tuscan however still goes on.

Ah, the poor man's TVR
I seem to recall there are a couple of electronic modules (or 'relays', which they're not) fitted to the later V6 injections that the earlier type didn't have; one is an ignition pulse monitor (in effect) that checks to see if the plugs are firing before it will turn the fuel pump on. Similar to how the V8 injection works. It's intended to cut the fuel pump if you hit something and stall the engine, so you don't get fuel spraying from split lines. Of course if it can't see sparks, it won't start.
The other does something... can't recall what
... IIRC one module is pink and the other green

The pink/purple one is the fuel pump one, which expects the ignition pulses. It's also fitted to stuff like XR3i, before it went entirely electronic...
When ign turned on, this unit should run the pump for approx 1-2 secs and then stop - which is a good way to test if it is working....
Not sure what the green one is.....intermittent wipe ??

Thanks for the help gents. I like the poem Zig, I'll frame that and hang it on my wall. I'll always be a Wedge man as I know how addictive they are, especially the V8 rumble.
Well, right now my 290S has less horsepower than a supermarket burger. The AA man came over and had a look and did some very thorough tests. He says it's definitely electrical. We found the two relays under the glove box. One is red and the other is yellow. According to the S forum the yellow is the one for the fuel pump. I have no way of testing these as I don't have another to substitute. There were a few blown fuses which we changed and there is no fuse that constantly blows. Still no joy. I have not done the test of putting ignition on and checking for the two second activation of the pump relay. This I will do today. AA man reckons there is power getting to it when ignition on, but no power gets to the pump, neither can we hear a click from the relay. So just wondering if I should replace the relay anyway. On the other hand I am wondering if it is something to do with the Scorpion alarm system that was disconnected years ago. It's a bit of a coincidence this has happened after disconnecting the battery for charging. Any other ideas would be most welcome. I have also booked a car electrician to come over tomorrow to take a look.
I am beginning to wish I had just waited a bit longer without a TVR and bought a Tuscan or just purchased another Wedge. Still, I've never had an S before and now I have. All I have to do is get it running. All the best. The battle goes on.

Hi Mate..I would change all the relays as you never know..Alarms are a frigging nightmare..They get fitted..Ripped out..Re-fitted..Ripped out and then Re-fitted again...I would rip it out and make sure there is nothing left to hinder the ignition..The amount of connections and wire left in by this process is a joke!!..I guess the problem with EFI is trying to find a problem..I much prefer the MFI..Could be the ECU that controls the system..I think you can still get them..Also if you can get yourself a Ford sierra V6 haynes manual, I believe they cover the 2.9 ..I wish i could help more but i know shyte about the efi...Good luck mate...Ziga
Do the simple stuff first ... is the battery charged? Did you connect correctly in terms of polarity? Cross polarity can cause all sorts of problems!!
Does the car show 12v on the meter when ignition on?
Does the car crank?
Take a plug out and is it wet / smells of fresh fuel?
While the plug is out and with some good quality pliers hold against metal / ground and is there a spark?
Lets eliminate these to start with...!
Chris

There is plenty fuel of the correct type.Does the car show 12v on the meter when ignition on?

Battery fully charged
There is power at ignition key
No spark
No fuel pump function or power at fuel pump
Power at fuel pump relay but no function.
Fuel pump relay swapped with relay next to it as they are the same rating. Still no joy.
Scorpion alarm disconnected.
I am fast running out of ideas but the car electrician is due tomorrow. My hope is now on him.

Had this problem on my 400se after replacing fuel pump.Pump wouldnt come on with ignition on.Local mechanic pinpointed it down to alarm and made up a piece of wire with spade connectors each end and pushed them into alarm module probably bypassing something and she fired up
.Hope you get it sorted.ps my alarm is a philips

Tony does the car crank?
If no spark and it cranks then it sounds like a dizzy or coil problem difficult to say without seeing it, if no crank then maybe the immobiliser?
Cheers
Chris
The car cranks over at a nice fast rate but there is no spark. The pink engine relay has power to one terminal at all times, even with the ignition off. Is that normal? The pump also refuses to work and there is no power getting to it. There used to be a Scorpion alarm fitted at one time but is supposed to be disconnected. I am still not having much luck.If no spark and it cranks then it sounds like a dizzy or coil problem difficult to say without seeing it, if no crank then maybe the immobiliser?

Hi Tony..Just been reading some info and apparently you are not alone..
Customer Question
My son has a 1990 Ford Ranger with a 2.9 V6 - EFI. Won't start. History: Ran fine in the am to school. After school, ran rough on the way home with RPM surges. Progressively got worse with decreasing power. By the time it got home, hardly ran. At first, we could start it, but idled extremely rough with surges, now won't start at all. I've checked fuel pressure (40 psi - dropped to approx 34 when it started). Changed fuel filter, check fuel delivery OK. (1/2 pint in 10 seconds). Checked spark with tester. Spark appeared weak, changed coil. No change. Then spark became intermittant. Finally, no spark at all when engine turned over except for one spark from coil when turning ignition off. Changed Ignition Module, cap, rotor (verified rotor turns during cranking), spark plugs and wires. Still no spark. I'm stumped. And yes, it has gas. Any help out there?
Expert:
I believe that your vehicles ignition system utilizes a pick-up coil in the dist to trigger the ignition module and start the spark delivery process. If it has gone bad(as they are prone to do) then all the symptoms you are describing would be present. I would change out the pick-up coil and be sure to check the air gap on it when you do.
Customer.
Thanks, Does the distributer need to be removed to replace the pick-up coil. I attempted to change the coil, but there's a metal plate above the coil assy. that has to come off. I pried gently, but it didn't seem to want to move. I tried to do a resistance check on the pickup, but I believe it's Hall Effect sensor rather than a induction coil. I gambled that it was the Ignition module and put it back together. I'd rather not pull the distributor if I can help it.
Expert:
Un-fortunately YES the dizzy has to be removed and dis-assembled to replace the pick-up coil.
Hope this helps mate...Ziga

Pics Tony !
looked at several S's before the wedge.
i like em, but wanted a V8 and most are 2.8/2.9........V8's were way too expensive so went a wedging
I know this is the wrong forum but here is a quick picture of my 290S while I am waiting for the electrician to turn up. It actually sounds awsome and I am thinking maybe the stainless exhaust on it is a custom one. I only bought it out of boredom whilst looking for a Tuscan, as a rolling restoration. Its got a surprisingly good chassis with still in original white powder coating though once I get it going I will waxoil it.looked at several S's before the wedge.

OK. Car electrician is here and after an hour and a half of sifting through the wires, my TVR burst into life. Job is not finished though. He has to pop back and get some things he needs and will be back to tidy up the wiring. Hopefully it will be up and running shortly. The cause was that stupid old Scorpion alarm system that was only partially disconnected. Me disconnecting the battery for charging activated it somehow. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Cracking looking car Mate.
Nearly as nice as your last one! I went up to see it in Mansfield a just after you sold it but unfortunately it was at Steves house not the garage.
Trying to resist going back as I know I can't afford it
Good luck with the S. I also looked at these prior to buying the Wedge. It was a close thing.
