Seems I lost a tank of gas since my motorcycle accident (got hit by a drunk driver right before christmas). Leaked out a good 10 gallons or so on the floor. I'm in no shape to crawl under but have replaced everything except the large like 50mm lines and the swirl pot. I'm in no shape to crawl under and figure out where it is leaking from at the moment with my broken pelvis and seperated shoulder but without a bike at the moment will need a fun outlet as soon as the weather brakes and the salt is off the roads. Besides, would rather replace everything now that the tanks don't need emptied.

Ben Mate i was going to say at least gas is cheap here ! but that's not really true anymore ...hope you make a fast recovery , i seem to have a leak between the big hose that joins the 2 tanks and i hope its just the rubber hose and not the metal neck which it is attached! it only leaked when i filled it up to the brim this winter time (sucks) and so do drunk drivers

Thanks Bob,
I'm assuming my tanks are good as the car spent its life in California then S. Colorado and is absolutely gorgeous rust wise. Best I can tell bending as far as I can it seems to have started right in that center between the tanks so we shall see. Yeah, d.d. suck, esp. at 10am on a Sunday morning 2 days before Christmas but I can't complain, I'll live to ride another day and hopefully will take a careless cager off the roads and for that matter free society for 6 months to a year.

I did find Richard Thorpe makes swirl pots but for some reason I didn't think Richard sold stateside but I'll flot an email that way and see

Ben,

My 1987 (made in 1986) 280i has 5/8" hoses from the tanks to the swirl pot and from the swirl pot to the fuel pump. Three feet is enough for the three hoses. You can find this size in marine stores; it is common for bigger boats. Get the one Coast Guard approved, costing about $4 a foot. On mine these hoses were in very bad state; I recommend you check them.

There are several versions of swirl pot. Mine has two inlets at the top (one from each tank) and an outlet to the pump at the bottom. I also have a small pipe that will return any air to the top of the left tank. Some have no air return, but they have one from the accumulator. Older models just have a simple tee. So if you want to be original you will have to check which you have. Apparently it is not critical and since they are pricey in the UK, you may prefer to have yours fixed.

Wilf.

Hi Ben..Glad you are ok albeit a bit busted up..Drunk drivers suck but so do drunk pedestrians..I had a guy run out in front of me twenty years ago..Even though i swerved he kept running..I hit him at 25mph..He disappeared and then came crashing through my windscreen..He died right there in front of me...I have also lost friends and a cousin who rode Motorcycles...

As regards to fuel pipes..Change all of them if you can and use good quality clamps..Something like High torque Norma clips...Also check the seams around the collars as mine is leaking around the 2" filler collar on the tank...Also make sure the hose is ok to be submerged in fuel as some marine hose is purely filler only..Try to avoid hose with a steel helix as clamping is not so good..I found this 2".(ID 51mm) hose here in the uk..Here is the part number if it helps..Product code:H-T650AA-2".

Cheers...Ziga

Steve Reid TVR in Cheshire supplied me a new swirl pot some years ago. It was competitively priced too I seem to remember.
