Well I felt good enough today to go out and at least lie on the ground to look for the gas leak, nothing apparent but I couldn't slide my broken body under there without jacking so I figured I'd start the car to see where the fuel level was at. The f-ing starter that I got raped by the shop that did the clutch had rebuilt (which had the solinoid rattle off last fall while taking my wife to a anniversary concert because the shop didn't use a lock washer) decided it was going to just keep running after tryihg to start for a few seconds. To shut off I had no choice but to put it in gear and then it stopped. Now it just clicks from the solinoid when you try to start it. What to I gotta to to get it out? Remember it seemed tight against the frame when I was under there last but is there room to get it out w/o removing the tranny? I'm not in the best shape but would hate to have to get the thing towed back to his shop 30 miles away.

Hi Mate..On my UK spec 280i i can get to the starter by taking the N/S wheel off..Which would be your drivers side..I think...Ziga

Yeah, I agree with Zig...from memory I managed to get the starter out by jacking up on starter motor side.

Take wheel off and then you can just about get your arms and hands in. As I also remember,
it's still a real b*stard to get at the top bolt, you need the long extension bars on your socket set (1/2 inch or 13mm socket), and support the starter on wooden blocks etc, as it's heavy at the angles you're working. It's then just possible to get the starter out, but it's pretty tight.

Also, there are different starter motors - the Bosch one is shorter than the Lucas, so it's easier to get it out...If you need parts, I think the Lucas one is the same as TR6 (a P100 ?? - something like that).

NB. I had a solenoid come loose even WITH the spring washers fitted (Lucas starter), so it can happen !

Thanks, I didn't want to take the car back to the butcher who charged my $280 for what he said was s liftime rebuilt starter. I guess his lifetime is 11 month, 3k miles. So much to do with a dislocated shoulder, disected pelvis, imobile thumbs and more lacerations internally then a cutter does on a good day but without being able to ride a cycle for the near future I'm gonna have to do some autox in the tvr to try to get my fix.

Most of my friends have made it clear over the years. They won't touch my British stuff. I think they're afraid they'll actually like it too much. All things considering I am getting better fast. Just started from pretty much that potty training stage after being bagged for 2 weeks.
