thinking about it how can they prove the mileage on the engine!!! is it possible they've got the whole car?????????
I must admit, it's one of the things I've always wondered about engines for sale! How the hell do they verify the mileage? I guess there's a certain element of trust involved, but call me Mr. Cynical, I prefer something a little more solid than a salesman saying its only done "x" amounts of miles.
As I found out with my 280K mile rover 820 I owned a few years ago, that I bought before the age of the Internet and being able to check mileages etc. as only having 80K miles

I guess that's a chance you take..Even if you had seen it in the car and read the tripometer who's to say that is genuine..My view is that if you can get an engine cheap enough then its worth re-building for peace of mind..At least then you know what you have..al 350i said:
i saw that too............what a road car that would make!

Parts...Parts..Parts....bought a bmw mini gearbox the otherday from breakers, guy said it had only done 5K! the gearbox could only be from 2004-2006, so i said to the bloke "what ever" the likely hood of a 8ish year old car only having covered 5K is slim at best or its sat on the shelf for 8 years. All i want to know is does it work and is it cheap!
in my experience most breakers will tell you any old b
ks but if your fitting parts yourself then if worth a gamble for the cost savings over new.

one thing i did notice is that it seems to have a crank position sensor on a bracket with what looked like a round black plug socket which could plug in some sort of diagnostic device! now i don't have one of these on mine but i have noticed 2 holes where one would attach to the block, should i have one????

Was there a trigger wheel on the crank pulley?..It might of been part of an upgraded ignition system..al 350i said:

Hi did it look like this? The black plug next to the water pump pulleyIf so its part of the original engine diagnostic system!
Which means its an early engine, how much did they want for it?
