Evening all. I've been sorting a few electrical issues on my A reg 280 and have found that the diagrams for the fuseboard and relay layout in the bible bear absolutely no resemblance to what's in my car. Does anyone have a layout for these ie fuse size and what it does ? The fuseboard is a 18way - 3across 6down marked Pressac. The relay board is 8 relays 4x2 I could try and trace everything but I reckon someone on here will have the info I need and save me the aggro smile ill try to post some photos tomorrow. Thanks in advance fellas thumbup

Have you got black wiring, and is the fuses box on the off side front wing in the engine compartment?

If so, what you have doesn't sound like the standard fuse box etc.

You should have 12 fuses together, but seperated into three groups, one of six, one of four and one of two these should be at the front of the fuse/relay board with two rows of four relays behind and then a couple more depending on what you have fitted to the car!

The wiring diagram on page 250 of the idiots guide is the closest you will get to a early 280i, if you have coloured wiring and the fuse box is in the passangers footwell. Sorry I have no idea!

My 280 is an all black 1982, and has the panel on the inside front wing.
I have 10 relays, 2 rows of 5. Here is what they do...

the fuses are - numbered from top down.

1 main beam (from relays)
2 dip beam

(3 - 8 joined on one side and are LIVE feed from BATTERY)

3 side lights (& dash)
4 passenger window motor
5 driver window motor
6 clock (others ?)
7 drivers H/L Motor
8 pass H/L motor

(9-11 joined on one side - IGN/run feed)

9 H/L flasher, horn (others ?)
10 heater motor (others ?)
11 rear brake lights, washers, wiper, rev lights

12 Aerial ? (disconnected on mine)

Relays are (from from top, front)

Top row - Starter Motor,Horn,Fuel Pump (reverse),Fuel Pump(supply),Ignition Slave
Bottom row - Driver H/L motor, Pass H/L motor, H/L lift drop signal, main beam, dip beam

H/L = headlamp

The fuel pump relays have to reverse the signal from the metering head, hence 2 relays
I have only ONE diode in the system to drive the headlight pods...

and the fuel pump relay has its own fuse on the top..

Fair enough, I hope my list helps at least to give you an idea of what fuses there are...

It's pretty hard to sort out with all black wires, I did it by either removing the fuses (and relays) to see what worked and what didn't, and/or tracing between the relays and fuses. It's not quite as nuts as it sounds, and doesn't take all that long to do....

Colour coded wires should be easy !!

I'm just being lazy and/or clever as I thought I might get the info off someone who had already done all the hard work !!! As I'm an electrician it shouldn't take me too long to sort through it all, once I've done it ill post up the diagrams for anyone else who has the same set up.

The relay panel is a modular system that is often assembled differently to how it's shown in the various publications - including TVRs own drawings.
Best way to do it it use the colour-code system to identify what the relays control and the fuses protect...

And of course 30 (ish) years of possible owner mods, and with all black wiring and rubber sleeves which fall off at the slightest excuse, I appreciate just how good colour coded looms really are !! I have a Cortina loom awaiting the big rewire, and Granada front looms to go with it - should be enough wires.

My 280i from 1982 is completley different! The fuse board is in the glove box, and as for a relay panel! Well, I don't have one, all my relays are in line!
So many owners had been fiddling around with it that there was nothing original in the wiring, have spent the last few months trying to make sense out of it. Well worth it tho. Rewired where needed, new relays fuses, everything working and can point to a wire and tell you what it does in my sleep! (Except for the wiper motor!)
Bite the bullet and strip it out, well worth it.
