What does this chassis look like? (Photos)
Discussion
All,
I'm hunting for a wedge, my first ever TVR.
A vendor of a potential car has sent me these photos of the underside of his car and I would value your opinions to general condition, what work is needed now (and cost) and what is likely down the line (and cost!).
The vendor has sent me these in good faith so if you do know the car, please don't reveal it as that would be unfair on the vendor (if it's a pit).
The car will come with a 12 month MOT but I'd still value your opinion as I am total green on TVR's.
Thanks

Hi
There are a few to many areas which need attention, so it would need a body off restoration very soon! Then the rustie areas can be delt with!
It may not be that bad when you get the body off but its the only way to treat that much corrosion!
Plus by the look of the pics it will need a rear brake work very soon, In fact in my opinon its not been used for some time and it may not pass the MOT!

There's no substitute for a poke with a screwdriver and a tap with a hammer to see if it 'rings'. You can't tell from photos - it could be a good bet in need of a wirebrush down and a coat of paint/waxoyl. You can do that in a weekend; a horrible messy job but do-able and cheap.
What's the interior/body/hood/screen/engine/rad/brakes/suspension/diff/electrics like? Any one of those could be much more expensive and time consuming.
And then there's the power steering question...!! It's a bit of a shock to drive a wedge without it if you're used to modern cars...

In my opinion, from what can be seen in those pictures, the chassis looks suspect. What worries me the most, is the sections that can't be seen, that are of importance, such as behind the outriggers and behind the metal plates in each corner where the outriggers join, and above the corner plates. This is where most of the damage would be found, as this is where mud a de bury accumulate soaking up water and remaining damp over the years. In all honesty, the condition of the chassis cannot be accurately assessed by looking at random photos, nor by looking under the car by the roadside. To assess the condition accurately it needs to go high up on a ramp. If however you get to inspect the car by the roadside, I would recommend a powerful torch and a good mirror. I hope this helps.

Hi
Mine was not quite as bad as that, but after a bloody good wire brush on a grinder it cleaning up a treat, if i was you i would ask the seller if he can take a picture of the outriggers, he should be able to at lease get a picture from the back off the plates which should give you a good indication of condition, good luck, Ralph
here a couple of picture's, hope this helps

Ideally though i think you need to be a bit more patient as you will end up with a wedge that will spend more time in the garage than on the road..Bit like mine in the begining..I would make a lousy doctor as i have no patients whatsoever...You will end up buying a whole heap of trouble and then be watching bargains pass you by..Keep an eye on the PH classifieds and fleabay and try to get as much history as possible..And dont be affraid to ask about any wedge on here..Spring is coming and its normally a good time for wedges being sold..Ziga
There is a good looking V8 in the classifieds at the moment..

An extra consideration.
From my experience, it is not so much what you can see from underneath, it is what is on the topside of the chassis. Also, it is the quality of the welding at the junction of the chassis tubes.
Also, as previously mentioned, the best advice is to find one that has had a body-off restoration and there are pictures to validate it.

Too far gone IMHO, unless you are happy to replace the chassis.
Are new chassis available or are you limited to using a second hand one? - presuming one could be found.Don't think I'd want to use a second hand one if I'm going to all the trouble of replacing a crap one
