Hi Peeps..Well while i was at the garage the other day having my wheel bearings done i thought i would fit the supercharger bracket to see what was what..The existing 65 amp alternator is way too big to hang from the pivot fixing on the S/C bracket..This now means that either a complete re-fabrication of the bracket is in order or i find a race type alternator that has a small outer casing..Around 5-5.5"..I have found some online but they are extorsionate!..Would any of you nice sporting race chaps have an old small bodied alternator sitting around for beer tokens..Even if it needs refurbing..Or if anyone knows of a possible japanese type fitment that has a small outer casing..Ideally it needs to be 65-70 amps..And have three mounting points..As pictured..Also ideally needs to be the three pin plug type, Although the fixings and the wiring is a lot easier to change/mod than the bracket..Cheers..Ziga

I have found a dynator which is an alternator fitted into a dynamo body but they are only 45 amp and are not cheap!...

Hi Zig
A denso alternator for a daihatsu could fit in your hand mate and should kick out enough power to drive your electric's no problem, i think there around £100.00, hope this helps

MMmmm...I think this is the first time i have quoted myself!..I have just realised a major F**K UP..It's 2.5" from the fixing point of the bracket which means the alternator would have to be that size in total...Eeerrr..Not physically possible!..The bracket will need re-fabricating as well as a smaller alternator..The re-positionig of the pivot point is feesable but then i realised the bracket is cast iron....banghead..Not easy to weld at all!!..So it looks like i will need to get a new bracket made..can anyone recommend anyone...Cheers...Ziga

Isn't there room on the other side of the engine to mount the alternator?

THen you'd only have to make a bracket for the alternator which would be easier - much more lightweight.

Perhaps some piccies would help us visualise the problem.

Hi Adam...There would of been but i had to fit a capri power steering pump and move that over to the other side..I could take out the power steering but then would have to change the steering rack..

Hi zig
Could you not drop that down and locate at the bottom of the engine mate? or move it forward to pick up on the pas belt

Cheers

Ralph

Hi Ralph...The main problem is that the wedge has quite a steep steering column, When i compared it with the sierra and the capri they both had sufficient clearance to do just that..I think the bracket is the only option...Cheers..Ziga

Hi Zig
just edited my post, could you move it forward to pick up on the pas belt, not sure if that would give you enough room mate, would be good to see it in place and then advise mate, cheers, ralph

Mark,

Toyota uses the small Denso (and more efficient)alternators most having 70+ ampere output:

Hi Ralph..Not enough room to do that mate..

Hi Phil...Thanks for that i will look for one similar but will need the left hand fixing..I think a new bracket will be needed...Its a shame the old one is cast as it would be a simple mod..

Hi peeps..I have been thinking..scratchchin..I might have to ditch the power steering...I have found a brand new manual cortina MK5 steering rack for 100 sobs which at the moment is the cheapest option for making space so i can fit the supercharger..Otherwise its a re-fabrication of the existing cast iron bracket and a new smaller cased alternator or a new cast bracket and alternator either of which will come to over 100 smackers..I could then let the rack and pump go for some beer tokens as i have just had the rack reconditioned..And i have two PAS pumps..
1. Montego pump for the O/S fitment.
2. Capri pump for the N/S fitment.

Or i forget the supercharged option altogether..which is something i dont want to do in honesty...Cheers..Ziga

Hi Mark

I haven't been following this completly.

So bear with me.

The problem you have is you want to fit the S/C in the space above the alternator in your bottom pic in this post,
Is this correct?

You can't do it because you have no way of attaching the S/C other than use the location points the alternator is located on.
Is this correct?

Or is there another problem!

Hi Andy...The S/C came with a fixing bracket made by ford that fixes to the bolt hole where the earth for the battery bolts in and the two front fixings where the alternator bracket goes at the moment, There is a pivot fixing for the alternator on the S/C bracket but it makes the alternator sit too low...In fact it will hit the steering column..On the capri and sierra the steering column does not appear to be so steep as in the wedge..The bracket is set so that the distance from the S/C pulley lines up with the crank pulley and is the correct distance apart for the length of the S/C belt..So in essence i dont really want to muck about with the bracket...If i can fit a manual steering rack then the alternator could be positioned on the other side of the engine and that way i could still use the one i have and not have to changed the bracket for the S/C..A smaller much simpler bracket could be made to re-position the alternator..So far this would be the most cost effective and less monkeying about solution..Cheers...Ziga

Hi Mark,

Another option would be to replace the engine PAS pump with an electric one from a Pug 106 or Saxo as far as I know later TVR's with the SP6 used the same electric pump.

I was going to suggest ditch the PAS pump and fit a leccy one instead, but i was beaten to it laugh

I'd look into 1 from an A class merc though, as they are more upright and would be easier (possibly) to fit in the bay biggrin
