It's for the off side rear wheel this time. I suspect this maybe the wheel bearing but there's no play at all in the wheel when jacked up?

Does anyone know what car they are off and the best place to get quality ones from please?

I've found a kit online but they where 50 quid! That seems pretty steep for a bearing and a couple of seals?

Cheers Karl.

Hi mate..If there is no play in the wheel then the bearing might just need some grease in it..The rear bearings are essentially granada mk2 but with two seals instead of one..They are advertised for TVR and its best to always replace in pairs..You need to shop around as well...I will try to find where i got mine from..But here are some a bit cheaper..Ziga

Cheers Mark

Are they easy enough to replace or are we talking specialist tools? According tomthe bible it sounds like the nut can be a bit of a task to get off!

Just noticed it said Grany MK 2 in the bible Doh!

Thanks Karl.

It can be a bit of a mare to do..The hub nut needs a 38mm socket..A long bar or pipe to get the torque needed to undo and do up the nut..(234lbs of torque)..You will need a press to press the bearing in which makes life a lot easier as you dont want to put it in pished!..Care must be taken when removing the old ones not to burr the edges..The hub nut should have a plastic sealing ring on the inside and if this is damaged then you might have to start drilling holes in the thread and using split pins..This is not an ideal practice as it weakens the structure of the thread..Care must be taken not to get any dirt on the splines..Loctite/thread lock should be used on the re-fitting of the hub nut...There is an explaination in the bible..I would take it to a competent mechanic and watch over them like a hawk..something i always do..My excuse is that im learning..hehe

You can change the bearing without removing the hub/trailing arm from the car.

I did mine using a home made tool (previously acquired for a 911) similar to this

If it's been running with no grease and has got to the stage of making a noise it's almost certainly too late to start adding grease...

Karl,

Not all rumbles are from the bearings. Check the tyres; sometimes they get "cupping" on the treads - put on some old gloves and feel the tread for unevenness. The sound is similar to bad wheel bearings.

Wilf I'd got it up in the air on the lift running in gear. I could never quite put my finger on where it was coming from driving the car. As you say there are a lot of other things going on. The gearbox is definitely still grumbling but there's not much I can do about that for now.

But while underneath it was deffiinately coming from the hub area. Could be UJ I suppose. But I'm going to take the car off the road now for a month and do the complete rear end with polly bushes, bearings and UJ's along with a chassis clean an paint.

I can then get the ramp back on eBay. It's nice to have but I keep tripping over bits of it biggrin

Cheers Karl

Karl,

Do you have one of those cheap Chinese "mechanic's stethoscopes"? I am wondering if you can SAFELY use it to pinpoint the noise(s). I have used one for many purposes, but under the car would need some precautions. But then you have a good lift!

Thanks Wilf

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and just strip it down. I want it as good as I can get it for the summer. Nows a good chance to do the chassis and it's false economy for me to just replace the odd bit. So I'm going to order the lot tomorrow (except the UJs I need to get them off first to SE what size they are)

I would like to try and get this done in a couple of weeks but we will see. I'll try and put a few pick on of the progress but it's a pain with an iPad.

Cheers Karl
