Hi Stewart

The two favorit places for gas struts are.

RT Racing.
or
SGS who advertise on this forum page!

The choice is yours!
I prefere RT as you can adjust the presure in theres but are a bit more expensive, were SGS are set with no adjustment, but are cheaper!

IIRC the adjustable type are only adjustable one way, i.e. you let out pressure until you obtain the necessary resistance - you can't re-pressurise them yourself. I've used SGS for a couple of pairs over the years sand am very happy with them and the service received.

I got mine from SGS, a bit expensive at £72 for 4 but they make all the difference, no more headaches or trapped fingers

Are they the same struts for the boot lid too?

I'm currently using a bamboo cane smile

Yes if you don't have a spoiler, if you do you need stronger ones, just refer to their website, all is explained.

When my bonnet ones go flaccid I put them to one side and then eventually re-use them on the boot lid as you need less pressure.

I've just bought a 350i with soft bonnet rams, I work on Land Rovers and have fitted 2 rams from a Range Rover, £10 each if anyone's interested.

I heard the Rangey ones can be a bit too hard and cause stress cracks on the bonnet - can you let the pressure out a bit on your ones? Is the bonnet harder than it should be to pull down? Or else use some old used ones off a Rangey as the pressure will have diminished a bit. Plus you could get them for free ;^)

I've no idea how easy it should be to lift with the originals, the old ones wouldn't hold it up, the new RR feel fine to me, it assist's rather than knocks your teeth out as it opens.

Well when they are just right they should be able to hold the bonnet vertical - just. If they are too strong you will have to push a bit to close it. I used new Rangey Classic tailgate ones and found they were a bit too strong, but when I used old ones they were just right.

Another trick is to only replace one side, if they are a bit strong.
