Bent rear tie bars
Discussion
Hi All
I've stripped down all the rear suspension on my 350i this afternoon. This is the state I found the rear tie bars in. Can anyone please advise what they are off, or are the TVR's own with a Ford end?
Had to buy a 3/4 socket set as well to get the 38mm hub nuts off! No need for a 6 foot extension bar though. Just 14 1/2 stone (ish) stood on a breaker

Cheers Karl.

A frame rear suspension right? These are TVR specials. SH did some replacement upgrade ones of which I have a pair I haven't got around to fitting. When I do I'll have the originals up for sale.
But to be fair you could just have them straightened - use a bit of heat to avoid causing any cracks. A proper blacksmith should be able to do it.

I may have one available - snapped one and replaced them with the SH versions. Will look tonight
Thanks Number 7I can get away with one. The off side is only slightly out so can easily be straightened. But the near side looks like a hockey stick. Must have had a right smack at some point?
Cheers Karl.
Brilliant mate
No rush I think I've been a bit optermistic about how quick I was going to rebuild the rear!
I've just got my first real look at the rear brake setup! I've shut the garage door and come back in the house. It to cold to start messing with that lot. Just started removing all the A frame bushes as well. Certainly more time consuming that the front end. Had to cut some of the A frame bolts out as well as they had fused to the bushes.
Luckily I have next week off. As I want it ready for Chatsworth.
Cheers Karl

My tie-rods are as bent as a politician. I'd guess that some tyre fitter has used them as handy jacking points (both bent on the threaded section)... yet strangely, the tyres have never seemed to wear unevenly as a result.
I was planning to cut the welds and replace the threaded sections but I have yet to find either studding or long bolts with the correct thread.

Start the engine and let it run up to temperature. At the same time bring your tools in and put them on the radiator. Then you'll be nice and warm! Well, not freezing, anyway...Cheers Karl

OK Karl - just checked in the garage and I still have the old bars - 1 busted, the other looks straight, and the bush is in good nick, having been replaced 4 or 5 years ago. If you can wait until the weekend I'll figure out what postage will be if you want it.
PaulYou are a top man thanks very much for sorting this out for me. I will buy you a pint at the BBWF.
All time to pick your brains again.
I now have two straight tie bars thanks to Number7. I do however now seem to have another problem.
I ordered a complete set of POLLY bushes for the rear end. The tie rod bushes are two dirrent sizes at front and rear. The bar Paul supplies has an internal diameter of 30mm for the smaller of the two mounting holes. Where as my pair are about 26mm internal diameter. The bushes supplied are to suit the 30mm hole size.
So now I'm back to square one. I either need to source another to match the one I got from Paul or I need to straighten mine and find the smaller POLLY bushes. My supplier has never encountered the smaller size?
Has anyone else found bushes to fit the 26mm hole?
Thanks Karl.

Simples! You need to turn the poly bush to fit the smaller hole. Find a bolt to fit the centre and clamp it in with a nut, then stick bolt into a drill. Get a sharp chiselly-type thing and run the drill, taking material off till you get down to a tight fit in the new tie bar.
Brilliant. I'll see if I can find someone with a lathe to do a proper job. I can't be trusted with drills and sharp objects
Thanks Adam
Karl.
