A small miracle

Yeah I reckon so too - and I had to reduce the throttle bypass as after fixing it the idle revs rose to about 1300. The strange thing is that the first pipe had the problem from when I bought the car, and so had a replacement bodge pipe that I put on (some ex-SDi trunking) despite being careful about leaks. Also if there was a leak then shouldn't it have been running lean (less air metered) so somehow it doesn't stack up at least in my mind....
A few uneducated theories/guesses:
1) Air leak on the old pipe, if the engine was running weak maybe you had to open the throttle more to compensate and this used more fuel. A weaker mixture wouldn't always use less fuel.
2) Turbulence in the new pipe, the new set-up might be generating turbulence which leads to improved fuel/air mixing and more efficient combustion
3) Less restriction in the new pipe, the new set-up allows better air flow maybe because the metal pipe is smooth
