400SE Aluminium Dash Maker Wanted!
Discussion
During this coming week I will be going round to a few local metal work firms to see if I can get them to cut a three piece decorative aluminium dash for my 400SE. This is just the standard 400SE dash layout to be cut out of say 1.2mm decorative alloy sheet. If there is anyone on here that has the equipment to do the job or has done something similar before, I would be very interested to hear from them. Naturally, all expenses paid by me. I would rather a fellow TVR enthusiast got the job than someone I hardly know. If you can help, please get in touch.

You should take a trip to Archway Sheet Metal Works - Northumberland Park - opposite THFC ground. You're North London dude so you should be able to find the place. They make all types of metal works mainly for the catering market. But for me, they made my new outriggers with body mounting plates, they also made my brackets to replace the upper shock mounts ruined by Steve Heath's coil-over conversion debacle.
Making a new metal dash for them is a piece of piss. They're also Greeks so you should be familiar with their mannersisms and they way they do business...

I've know Archway Metalworks a long time when they used to be in Archway just off the Holloway Road. Though they won't remember be because they did a lot of work for me many years ago at a warehouse we used to own. There is also another company in Tottenham that does sheet metal. They are a much smaller company. These are the sort of people I have in mind for this work but I thought if there is anyone on here that dabbles with this kind of thing, I would rather the job went to them.Making a new metal dash for them is a piece of piss. Thanks for telling me about Archway Metal because I didn't know they had moved to Tottenham, but I am sure I will be able to find them. I need this done soon because there are so many things to be done on this car and God willing, I want to get it all done before the festival.

Tony,
Can you find the name of the other Tottenham shop and I'll drop by both?
I need them to turn a 5-clock dash into a 7-clock + several other tweaks to the design and of course I need it all symmetrical.

I don't know the name of the other metal work shop, I just know where it is because I used to deliver to a bakery in the same industrial estate a while back. Tomorrow, I hope to visit them both for my aluminium dash board. I will find out the name and details and let you know. Can you find the name of the other Tottenham shop and I'll drop by both?

Get it drawn up in AutoCAD and you could email it to everyone in the engineering world for a quote Can you find the name of the other Tottenham shop and I'll drop by both?

you could get creative......i recently did a dash as follows
Stripped the cracked old wood off......sanded the metal back panel down to ensure it was super smooth to remove all the old glue......then bought some textured brushed aluminium vinyl of ebay.....looks and feels like the real thing I promise, not the tacky carbon fibre stuff folks use.........PM me and I'll send you some pics of the finished article........only cost abot £30 for enough vinyl to do about 10 dashes lol

Tony,
Thanks.
Ian,
I tried getting my head around CAD for schematic diagrams years back and gave up in frustration when it did not do what I wanted it to - I have a short attention span and prefer to use professionals to get the professional finish I'm after. I just go broke getting there
Glen,
I mentioned previously I need a design change to the stock metal dash panel so pointless refurbing it.
After all is done I fancy some of that black ebony wood seen at last years fest;

OK. I visited several metal workshops today to have the three piece dash cut out of alloy. They all said the same thing, that I needed someone with a laser cutter, which none of them had. It seems these days no one wants to do any manual labour. It's all to do with pressing buttons. Then I went to The Archway guy in Tottenham whom I've been told does have a laser cutter. He said laser does not cut alloy for some reason and that he could only do it in stainless steel but he wanted a kings ransom to do the job, so I left. My hopes now are with a company, again in Tottenham as it happens, who do have a laser cutter and I've been told he can do the job. It's a small shop and I'll let you know how that goes as soon as I know myself. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Tony,
If you want aluminium you may be confusing them by asking for alloy. Brass, bronze or any mixture of two or more metals is an alloy. Here we can get anodized aluminium which comes with a mirror finish, but easily scratched.
I am going the simple route. I glued upholstery material to the backplate, and trimmed it. It matches the seats, etc. and is very easy to do. Maybe one day I will be more adventurous and use something else.
Wilf.

Before I went down this route I toyed about with the idea of fitting different materials to the dash, but because my car is black I thought alloy might be a better contrast. I asked them for sheet aluminium but they say the laser machine won't cut it so I decided a patterned stainless steel would also look good.If you want aluminium you may be confusing them by asking for alloy.
