I think I am in need of a new slave cylinder, the clutch works ok but I am constantly topping up the fluid.
I cannot see from where it is leaking and there is no drips or puddles I've had all the carpets out and it's all dry there.
The master cylinder looks fine and the pipe joining the two is also ok.
Does anyone know the part no for the slave? Just so I don't have to crawl under the wedge;-)
Also the copper pipe looks a bit of a bodge with its special TVR cable ties holding it in place, is it possible to fit a high pressure braded hose? Has anyone done this or changed for a better neater option?
Cheers

(Need a new slave)! I thought the slave trade went out years ago. (just joking).

From memory, I think both the slave and the master cylinders are the same as Land Rover parts, but you have to change both if you want to use a braided hose as the thread size is different on your existing system. As for using the correct part, I think its a bit of a trial and error by comparing the cylinders to be changed.

I agree, they are standard parts. Mine is a V8 LR Defender part from Rimmers - they do a large bore size as well as standard so you can play with clutch pedal movement vs effort. Mine was 1" bore (from memory), that was the large bore size. Very cheap in the UK, i'd guess they are freely available in OZ too - assuming you got the LR.

I have braided hose on the SEAC, just a case of getting the correct fittings to suit. An industrial hydraulic hose supplier sorted me out with those.

Thanks guys,
I'm hoping to gather all the parts before I start pulling it all apart.
I think I'll go the bradded hose option as the master cylinder is looking a bit old so a whole new system while I'm at it I think.
I will be able to get them here as there is a British car parts centre in Sydney which stock a wide range of parts.
Cheers

Hi,

I think it's the same as a Rover SD1 too

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID008898

Just in case you don't know be careful when you remove the old one not to pull the actuating rod off the clutch fork

If it were leaking out of the slave itself then there would be a drip coming out of the hole in the bulge in the bellhousing.

But as that isn't the case (I can tell even from 12000 miles away) then I predict that the pipe itself is failing - maybe inside the union itself. I had the same thing and the fluid disappeared sporadically and without trace as I was always moving when it sprayed out!

I'd change the whole cylinder, they aren't expensive

I'll second that. Seal kits are rarely a success. Here, you can buy a rover defender master and slave cylinder set for £20.00. That's how cheap they are. Is it worth getting a kit and risking a failure in the very near future? I think not.

Hi guys,

Finally got the chance to pull the slave cylinder out, it's a 7/8" bore which is a bit rusty......
There are a couple of numbers on it, see pics

Don't really know if these are numbers that can identify it but I've started looking for one here in Australia.
Does anyone know if it is that this, the 7/8" bore slave cylinder is fitted to the 350 being from the sdi setup, and if the 400,450 and seac are uprated to the 1" bore, if so, why? What's the advantage and if I can get a 1" easier than a 7/8" will it go straight on without creating more grief down the line in either direction, master cylinder or the clutch itself. I can order one from Rimmers but I would like to get one this week.
I thought I would run it past you guys so when I'm talking to a supplier tomorrow I will have the info/answers.
Cheers
Adam

A 1" will give 12.5% less pedal effort, although the pedal travel will increase 12.5%, and you end up with less travel at the clutch end to accommodate the wear in the clutch plate and linkage.

It's just pistons, after all.

That's just the casting number: Girling had a habit of using the same casting for parts with different bore diameters so you really need to strip it to make sure of bore size.

Well at least that's what they import them to oz for.
