In the never ending quest for more and more power.... (like they say there is never enough is there) In the process of buying a replacement gearbox I've been accidently been offered the 5.0 v8 lump that's attached to it biggrin

So I now have some options...

1. With the sensible trousers on and firmly buckled :
Stick with my low miles 4 litre and upgrade the injectors and AFM to go with the 72mm TB etc. And have a Holiday and maybe a new hood.

2. Back to wearing Jeans :
M90 Supercharge the 400 and fit Megasquirt, which I reckon by the time I've finished is going to cost around £1500 and a whole heap of labour hours in fabrication & getting it working and then mapping etc...

3. Karki Shorts option :
Drop in the 5L I've been offered, keeping the coilpacks, Carbon trumpets and bored out TB off the existing lump, swap over the injection to the 14CUX then sell the 40K 4.0 to claw some £££ back. Overall cost about the same as option 2 but in effect a couple of weekends work scratchchin

To me it's looking like a no brainier......

Cubes/ better airflow / proper control of fuel and ignition are the way to go. To some extent it depends on the provenance of the 5l lump. Was it from a Griff /do you know its spec in terms of cam and heads? Why is it being sold? Do you value originality of engine in the Wedge? I\f it was me I'd be tempted to put the new engine in (provided its a good one) and add proper fuel / ignition control (maybe Emerald).

No.3...But only if the 5.0ltr is as reliable as your existing engine..If its a griff lump then check the cam and the valleys in the vee for lubrication of the cam as there is a bit of a discrepancy with both..Apparently...Forget the shorts and get some spandex and then fit a blower to the 5.0ltr..eek

The 5.0 is a pre serp out of griff, it's a long story but it belongs to friend who's griff lost company with it's outriggers several years ago which then spawned a full chassis / suspension / drive train redesign. He's going for an LS+ Tremec box so the 5.0 is for sale to fund the upgrade (if he ever finishes it) From what he tells me it's got about 50K on it and he has a dyno plot before the rust set in showing 283 HP @ 4500 RPM.

He is local so I can nip over and take a look !

The 5L lump should already have large bore trumpets and inlet manifold. All it needs is the 72mm plenum on top with your coilpack system to make a genuine 300 horse. Good luck. driving

Nice choice to have Simon

I would go No 3 but talk to Hamish who now has the 5L 400SE
as I am sure he is very happy with the driveability

If you email me I can also give you the tel no of my friend Phil Haigh
who is my mechanic now, and who did and sold the 5L to Hamish.
I am sure he will be happy to talk to you to help and advise

A while ago I thought of getting a 450SE (as don't like the SEAC shape)
but have decided I will go the 5L route into my 400 when I get some money together

PS Phil has just bought Combines old SEAC and I am hoping will join us at BBWF

All the best Simon and hope all goes well

Cheers
Rich

BTW, talking of 5L's.

As there is both short and long stroke version of the RV8 5L builds, the former of course revving higher, does anyone know which was fitted as stock in any/all TVR's?
