Mine was matched by part number off the old rather than Cortina of dubious vintage. I believe there are few differences.
Garage probably went to Girling and asked, they then looked up old Bob who retired many years ago, who called Bert that retired from the stores, he called Jan the tea lady and asked her what became of that old cylinder she used to use to wedge the doors open to get the tea trolly through.... what was the part number on it.... and did she still have it.

The servo unit is from a 1.6 Capri/Cortina. Note that ones from 2.0/2.8 cars won't fit, they are bigger in overall diameter and foul on the bodywork underneath the servo. I know this because I've tried.
The actuator arm (between the brake pedal and the servo) are apparently also different lengths depending on whether it's off a Capri or Cortina (but the body is the same). TVR modified the units fitted to wedges - they've got adjustable clevis pins on the end of the actuator arm. I'm afraid I can't tell you whether a Cortina or Capri unit would be better as a direct replacement.
Hope this helps a bit?
