... only this time it didn't come back up!

I was on my way home when a silly duffer coming the other way on a narrow street decided to drive up the middle of the road, only to pull in when he got about 10 yards away from me. So I decided to give it 125dB = The onset of pain (thanks Zig) as he went past me to show my displeasure.

Anyhoo the loud pedal went straight to the floor and the revs dropped to idle! Oh-oh, snapped the cable methinks, luckily only 200 yards to get home, so I cruised home on idle in 4th gear. I even managed to back into the garage in idle! Couldn't have done that when I first installed my clutch, luckily it has softened off a bit since then.

As it turns out it's the standard problem with wedges - they didn't bother deburring and radiusing the hole that the cable goes through in the pedal lever. The result is that it gradually cuts through the cable at the end next to the ferrule.

A half hour later, some resoldering of the ferrule back on using my grandad's old tin of everlasting flux and some proper lead solder, and it's back together.

I spose in hindsight the silly duffer at the beginning of the story did me a favour - it could have failed tomorrow instead on the way to work in the middle of nowhere......

Glad you made it back home Adam.

I'd not heard about this problem before so will add it to the list.

I'm wondering if anyone can suggest any improvements to save it ever happening, broken cable that is.

Yes absolutely. Take the pedal mechanism off - it's usually held on with a couple of nuts and the cable end. Put it under a drill with a 10mm bit or a countersinking bit, and radius the slot on the forward-facing side. It will take about a half hour to do and save a headache trying to find or fix the throttle cable in the future.

Great.

Added to my ever increasing paper file.

We'll all end up with a wedge as reliable as a Toyotasmile
