How much coolant should i get to refresh my 350i
Discussion
Hi
I am running it in two of my cars and it great but a bit expensive to start with but in the long run it should be cheaper!
It replaces the water in the system so you don't get preassure in the water system. Its a great party piece, get the car up to temp with the fans going and go and take the top of the header tank! Nothing happens, no hot steamy water up your arm.
If you remove the swan neck cap you can sit and watch the fuild go by!

How much did they need of it, and did you use the pre-flush stuff? I am running it in two of my cars and it great but a bit expensive to start with but in the long run it should be cheaper!

...I have been thinking about that too..It sound's a good idea..It is fairly expensive but it cost me £30 per year for regular anti-freeze..Would have to make sure there are no leaks though..

Found the safety sheet and i'm kinda worried about the low 233F flash point of the stuff. Also seems a lot like regular 70% coolant only with
So it's 2/3rds of Ethylene Glycol (which is whats in regular coolant) 1/3rd of propylene glycol (the water "alternative")it's probably in that shampoo you used this morning, or did ya? And a wee bit of water. Oh and some anticorrosive stuff like regular coolant usually has.
Obviously that's for the NPG+ version of the stuff but i doubt the others differ a terrible lot.
All in all it does sound like good stuff altho i think it'll cool a bit less efficient than water does (what's the experience on that, might be neglectible) and it's not exactly as they claim safe to drink. Might even be easy to mix up yourself
P.S. what temp does a wedge normally run upto when it's stuck in traffic, my needle goes up to dead near 100 then drops down again due to the fan kicking in, i assume that's still pretty ok?

It's probably safer to drink than rusty nail!
Yes an engine bay fire might be exacerbated by this stuff if it got loose. As Andy says it won't be under pressure so that's a bonus. From what I've heard it's about the same as water for cooling effect.
I wonder how it would handle a head gasket leak?

I am converting both the 3000s and the Vixen S2 over to it as it really does make sense however make sure all your system is perfect first as its not a cure but a different form of coolant.
Hence I am having the radiator re cored on the 3000S next week even though its fine at present but as its one of the few parts that where not renewed when she was originally restored I guess its at least 10 years old so rather have a good system to start with.
Once in the car though it will reduce maintenance and corrosion which is a good thing in itself like all new products there are those critics out there but its being used by many race teams and rally teams as well.
And should there be a problem in the system that causes the temperature to rise you wont have pipes bursting or hoses coming off from the pressure which I must confess I had when my fan stopped working on two occasions one when the fan came off and another when the fuse blew as wrong size fuse fitted and lights where on the same fuseshould have been a 50 amp and had a 35amp and when I put the lights on and hit traffic the fuse blue and when on both of these occasions I would have had no loss of coolant and either popped a new fuse in or popped the fan off and find the bolt and re fit tightly? so it does make sense.
Yes a bit pricy but well worth the investment.
If you fit it make sure you label the radiator no water Evans coolant fitted as my friend bought a TR3 and could not understand why he could take the cap off when the car was hot and no steam came out.
I will be testing it properly on the Leiage-Bresia-Leiage Rally in July and will do a report then on its performance.
Remember the purpose of the coolant is not to reduce temperature but a better way of doing so.
When you think of it steel and water are not really the best of friends and we spend a fortune to keep it out of our cars.
Them we open up the engine and pour water into it and have done for years.

I may be wrong but when I had a head gasket leak it was a result of the overheating and the pressure on the gasket if there is no pressure??? enough saidYes an engine bay fire might be exacerbated by this stuff if it got loose. Regards a fire risk none of our cars produce enough heat to ignite it if spilled onto the exaust etc unless you have created a nitrus dragster in your garage

Yes we used the pre-flush fluid, and we used the same amout of fluid as you would normal use in a wedge!
With regard to the flash point that would mean you would have to have some form of leak. Most leakes normal come from a hose leak and as the system is not under presure the hoses are not likly to leak like a standard water based system, the chance of that are minamal I should imagine!
The engine takes the same time to come to temp which is a little lower than normal.

From experience - a re-cored rad and correctly bled system is all you need. I also dumped the useless otter switch system and manually switch my cooling fan off and on. Sitting in traffic wondering if the fan cuts in or not is pants IMO...
Previous owner put a brand spanking new one in, i was so chuffed to see that
