Decisions decisions..upgrade brakes, rebush or...what?

Only done custom exhaust so far...

What work have you done/had done that have given you the biggest 'bang for your buck'. Let's see what comes out on top.

I'm quite impressed with the new springs & adjustable shocks the previous owner put on mine.

It feels much better than my previous 280i which had the standard factory ones on it.

In fact it rides a lot like my old 400SE which I always thought had a very good ride indeed.

I will be upgrading my brakes this winter, as they are pretty awful, and to me good brakes are as important (or rather more so), as power output and handling.

Mine has Konis fitted, which seem very good.
The stainless exhaust sounds fabulous.

After the brakes, and a thorough checkover of chassis and bushes, I'll feel more confident in looking for a power boost.

Just went out for a good blast today, and she got me back home in one piece, so that is good enough for now

Vast improvment noticed when I rebuilt rear suspension with new bushes, springs dampers etc. along with new brake discs and exchange calipers. Cost a quite a bit though.
On a value for money improvement, it has to be fitting new column bushes and a bulkhead bearing. The steering is so different. Add to this that a lot of the rattles and squeeks have gone. All for about £22.00 and 2 hours work.

I will be upgrading my brakes this winter which were already upgraded from standard.
They are more or less in as new condition, seen about 6 outings on race tracks.
Let me know if anybody is interested.

Did the poly bushes on mine
Then the avo adjustables
Then a brake upgrade by TJ Motors
- sourced from a rally spares supplier - not as expensive as going the TVR supplied route!

Great package which made it handle and stop sufficiently well to satisfy my Croft and Yorkshire B road craving

Big thumbs up

Yep Gemini,
she's still dishing it out.
The kids love it. Everytime my 3 year old climbs in she goes...
"VVVVRRRRRROOOOOOOMMMM!!!!!!! Daddy VVVVRROOOM!"
Profile pic was taken at the Dream Machines open day in Sussex but I'm afraid I don't know the owners of the cars in the background.

Interested that you went for an exhaust first Toby. I have to say that it is always worth looking at the exhaust system - I have come across at least two cars which have melted fibre-glass and set light to carpets due to holes in exhausts!
Was yours purpose built or did you get it from someone like RT racing?

Nads, I did the exhaust first because the body was off and engine out following a quality bingle.

The guy that straightened the chassis happened to have been a custom exhaust guru in a previous life so he practically refused to put it back together without improving on the "crap factory job".

We were going to do all of the bushes at the same time with poly but he said they didn't need it. Wish I had insisted in hindsight.

The budget is v limited what with new houses and life in general so I have to spend wisely.

This isn't really a helpful idea if you are on a tight budget but...
has anyone tried putting a 2 litre turbo in their Taz for the road (like some of the challenge cars)?
Or maybe someone has done a swap with a more recent 2.9 engine. (The engine in my Sierra 4x4 seems a lot stronger, with more torque, than that in my Taz.)
I know that some companies will swap a 2.8 for a 3.1 'warmed up' Cologne engine too.
It would be interesting to hear if anyone has gone down one of these routes.

Yep, have a look at my profile. The car was originally a 200 though, not a 2.8.
The 2.9 has also been dropped into a 280.I believe it fits OK, just the exhaust manifolds are a bit tight.
Duncan Lister wrote this very good article about the conversion, it's on the wedge pages.

I'm in the process of fitting a Turbo Technics T3 conversion to my US spec 280I. The kit is the same as the very popular version fitted to UK 2.8 Injection Capri's back in the late 80's and early 90's.

This conversion will include many other upgrades to support the additional power, such as a set of J&S Forged Pistons and of course Brembo slotted/vented discs with Tuscan 4 pot calipers. It should have quite an impact when it's all done?
