...or rather, get stuffing! Your exhaust, that is...
A package arrived:

packed full of stainless woolly goodness:

Each roll weighs 0.5Kg and is supposedly about 19 Metres long. It's fairly loosely 'knit'...

So once I'd vacuumed out the last bits and pieces of the old packing, it was time to start stuffing! Which turned out to be a bit harder than I'd expected, but maybe if I wasn't trying to work through a keyhole it would have been less hassle. Eventually I located a length of snapped broomhandle which proved to be the perfect ramming tool:

Some time later, I'd got about 36 Metres of wire wool rammed into my cavity. And it was itchy, but that's another story

But that was the easy part: next I had to reinstate the cut-out pieces of the double-skinned can. By careful application of a G-clamp and liberal levering with screwdrivers I got the inner one tacked somewhere near in place, in the process reminding myself that it had been an awfully long time since I used a TIG welder
so don't look too closely

and once I'd made like Mr. Blobby a bit more, all that remained was to drop the outer piece back in...

Aye, I know, but my tame MOT tester has retired to Spain and I can't be certain that, in addition to the new noise legislation coming in, that I'd be lucky enough to find someone willing to overlook issues. If I ended up needing a new silencer it'd cost me more money and hassle than this has.MikeyB
Hi Ian
Sprint August 1997
390SE 73.000 miles HHC history, every detail recorded. New S/S exhaust, new tyres......................................just serviced and MOTed, Awesome performance, wonderful noise..............Contact John Beveridge.
is that the same exhaust ? given the years I dont think putting the packing back in is going to make a difference to the wonderful noise.

Yes, same car, same exhaust. Last time I met John (probably 10 years ago) he'd just bought a gold 400SE, not a common colour, dunno if he still has it... he ran the 390 as his company transport for 5 or 6 years in the mid-90s, that's when it racked-up most of the miles, but by god did he look after it. I have his records and receipts for about £18,000-worth of work done in the time he had it!
