What is your low down power like on your 350i? Mines doesn't seem to punch you in the chest until it is around 3k revs. I had a bloke looking to buy my 350i at the weekend, but when he test drove it he didn't think it had any power low down. He tried it in every gear from 1k revs, and never took it much above 2k in any gear. As I've never driven another wedge, and I am no expert, I told him I didn't know the answer. (I am guessing it will be to do with the cam profile in the car).
I have to admit, i have noticed that in the past that it laboured a bit at low down revs, but I usually just dropped a cog and off i would go. The bloke said he didn't drive like a boy racer, and needed something with low down power. Thinking about it, should the V8 have more power low down?

looking for opinions from other wedgers ...... thanks in advance.

My 350 is the same, and yes it will pull from low revs as loads of torque for a grunty V8, but to make it fly knock down a gear or 2 to get 3 to 4 k revs and then it really flies

The 450 is the same but idles about 1200 to start of with, pulls evenly to any speed from idle, but at 3000 rpm really kicks in and knocks you back into the seats, almost like a turbo would

Still trying to sell my 350, but not much interest in them at present, thought someone was looking at it yesterday, but I had bonnet up replacing new alternator in the rain and I think that put him off as he did not stop !

If he'd stopped he would have found out that I'd stolen old alternator for the 450 and putting a brand new one on the 350 !!

When you say 'pull', is it a push you back in the seat sort of thing? The guy did say that my wedge had 'no power' at low revs, and trying it myself, it does seem a bit lazy until it reaches 2.5 to 3k revs. Is this normal?

No not a push you back into the seat pull from low revs,

V8's are supposed to be big and lazy. If he wants that sort of low down perfomance then he needs a jap machine !

Even my 3.0l Omega is gutless until about 3K and then gets a bit frightning very quickly - can see why the police like them ! But at least it has more safety features than seatbelts !!

cheers for the reply. That puts my mind at rest, as I was thinking there might have been something wrong. So you've not had much luck selling yours then? Is it better waiting for spring to sell them?

Ignor the guy. If he wants that sort of performance he needs a six litre plus yank engine. Your car sounds normal.

Typical behaviour of 3.5 Vitesse engine.
I put a rising rate fuel pressure regulator on it, and now takes off from 2500 rpm.
So sounds like standard 3.5 behaviour to me. And I have not yet experienced a car that pulls so flexible in 3rd from around 2000rpm until I want to shift up (130 kph). Due to the V8 you can drive it like an automatic, and leave everybody behind you if you wish.

General logic: an engine starts to pull hard from rpm with maximum torque, until rpm with max BHP when it starts to 'die'.....

No car will do what he wants (including modern diesels), or he needs a Yank-tank as stated before. Or a 3.5 with carbs (and different cam) like in the SD1, but you give up torque and BHP.
Conclusion: missed opportunity.

Yeah I reckon wait to spring to sell, gives us all winter to tidy up niggles and then get top dollar for it !!

Had the 450 tuned yesterday, and still does the same, but smoother now. So at least we know nothing wrong with the engines. Hopefully be a bit more economical now.
