Hi Mate..I know very little when it comes to the V8 set up but have you checked ALL the usual suspects?..(Basics)..Timing..Fuel..Spark..This will help eliminate the related issues with each of them..Have you checked the condition of the fuel?..You said the car has sat for 17 months..(Has it been that long already)eek..The fuel tanks could go rusty in such timescales and contaminate the system!..Ive read on here many times that the distributor weights can fail although im not sure of the symptoms?...Hope its nothing too serious as its about time you came along to a sausage meet!..biggrin

I believe the distributor has springs attached to the weights to give it the correct advance in timing when it spins. If the springs are broken, come off or just weak, it would upset the whole set up. The vacuum advance mechanism could also be faulty or not functioning or the distributor gearing mechanism shot.

Apart from the timing/distributor have you checked the fuel pressure also has the fuel filter been replaced. Worth checking since it has been laid up for a while.

Hi Superwedge
If you can get it to idle, try moving the distributor with a timing light connected and see if the timing marks move when twisted, this would help elimiate a distributor fault. have you checked that the afm flap is not stuck and also you have no air leaks as this could cause this issue, good luck and hope you got that part i sent you, cheers, Ralph

And if the ECU plug is ok, I had these symptoms and resoldering the joints of the ECU did the trick.
Doing that to the ECU is not as daunting as it sounds, just need to be careful. If you don't want to do it yourself, they can point you on here to someone that could/would.

Test for me was to use another ECU and all was fine!

At what point does the engine start to die, if you open the throttle by hand very slowly do the revs increase then die at a point or just dies?
