hi chaps can any 400se owners have a look on the passenger side turret and tell me how many ceramic ballast resisters they have 1 or 2 (I now some cars don't have them like my 350)cheers

Mine started life as a 400SE and it has two (under the supercharger and now revealed).

One is a little broke at one end. But I thought they were load resistors for the fan - to get the different speeds?

Is the loom still mostly intact? In which case turn on the fan on low or high and see if any volts appear at the resistors - they'll probably get quite warm too...

They are for the dimmer on the dash lights and if they are anything like mine they where broken hence why the dash light switch has off, off and on. Took me ages to figure out what they where supposed to do !!

I think Simon's right - I knew it was something in the cabin. There are two for two different dim settings.

I have two ballast resistors, wired in series. Light switch under dash has 3 positions for dashboard lighting :- off / dim / full power.

Yes there was two resistors wired in series, I guess one did not sufficiently dim the lights either that or they needed to spread the power dissipation. I was going to replace them but never got around to it and pulled the cable back and shoved it with the rest of the spaghetti in the footwell.
