"White smoke and petrol smell" sounds like you've flooded it.

Is your cold start injector connected (can't quite see from the photo on your profile? If so disconnect it.

In that case might be worth checking the fuel pressure

I was thinking that maybe some crud got through the faulty pump and jammed the fuel regulator open.

Would be worth swapping the ECU if you have a spare too

Sounds similar to mine, Dave! I got mine sorted now, it turned out to be damp inside the AFM.

There's various websites out there with a fault finding sequence for flapper systems; get hold of that and work through it - it worked for me... give me a shout if you can't locate it. I started off down the route of substituting everything and couldn't find the problem, I can't recommend that course of action as if the engine is overfueling (your symptoms suggest that) then you'll be washing the bores and diluting the oil with fuel - very bad!

cheers martin im not running for long as I was worried about dumping loads of fuel down the bores this all started after I changed the fuel pipe at the rear for the mot then the pump died change that and all this has happened

I used to have an old 911 with an oil level gauge (dry sump) and whilst sat in traffic noticed the oil level raising. It transpired that I had a fault with the fuel metering head (similar to the 280i setup) and my sump was filling with petrol. Might be worth changing your oil once it's sorted

Could be overfuelling due to the old ECU solder joints issue...

If you end up with a dead ecu you can't repair and are going to bin can you throw it my way?

I'm trying to build up a 100% working spare since my recent ECU probs

Cheers

Check the temp sensor at the top of the engine (next to the thermo-time sensor). If this is duff or not connected then your engine will overfuel because it thinks it is cold.

In this sort of weather you can simply short out the connector to test it.
