Now I have searched and not come up with a specific enough thread so I could do with some guidance.

The power steering pump is playing up. It is fine at high revs but the steering goes heavy at low revs. It is not using any appreciable amount of fluid, which suggests that the pump impeller itself is not efficient or seals are playing up. It whines somewhat.

Are there reconditionable with a set of seals or is it a new pump? If so, where do they come from. I believe from other threads that it is Cortina Mk4 (car is 350i). But parts suppliers are surprisingly thin on the ground.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Drain all the fluid out and replace with nice new cherry red fluid before you shell out for new pumps etc mine was transformed when done

Thanks Guys

Replaced the fluid when I first got the car as I had to replace a couple of poorly constructed pipes. So I know it was new only a few weeks ago.

Having said that I drew some out with a syringe as I had topped it up this morning, but a little too much. I found that what I drew out was not nice and clean. It was quite mucky and black as if it has been roasted by the pump! Given that pretty much all of it must have come out when I replaced the pipes I assume that this is a recent transition in state!

The pump has been used in many Leyland/rover models.

Does that mean it's not a Ford unit?

I must admit I get very confused with all this cross-engineering of parts!!!

Don't object to the result though!!!!

Hi Mate..If the fluid was black and its making a heavy whinning sound then it could be the bearings wearing..Do as chris advised with the fluid..Ideally get yourself a turkey baster and remove as much out of the pump as possible...Top up and run for a minute..Repeat this until clear..The pumps do whine and more so on full lock...Also check the belt for tension..Ziga

Baster, not blaster, used to suck the juices from the bottom of the roasting tin to allow them to be spread on top of the turkey.......or to suck power steering fluid from a dodgy pump!!

Given my mistake in reading what you'd written, I may well do that!!

Just as well I let my better half do the cooking.

I do, however, administer the childrens medicin once in a while with a syringe thingy.............I think I'll keep that one well locked in the garage!!

When you've done the fluid, also take a look at the belt. Even when it's taught it might be slipping, and my trick for belts is a few drops of neat washing-up liquid which cuts through the grease and gives it more grip.

I hope so too. It's drivable but just a bit uncomfortable at low speed as it flirts between power steering and no power steering. I shall certainly set off next Saturday morning. God willing I will make it. If I break down on the way back that's a different problem!!!

Will change the fluid one evening though and check the belt before I set off. Also need to get a couple of tyres.

Hope it's a long week!

Which car are you taking? The blue one I hope!

I hear it also corrodes the rubber, so take your pick of how you want it to fail wink
