Last week I put a new coil on my misfiring SEAC and it ran like a dream. I had already replaced plugs and leads.

This weekend trouble was back. Under light load at around 30 - 40 MPH its as if the engine sounds exactly like rapid bursts of machine gun fire, combined with juddering. Its about 1-2 secs OK, then 1-2 secs of juddering, then 1-2 secs OK and so on. This is the first time I have experienced this sort of noise but have had other misfires.

I am wondering whether the new coil could be failing after just one outing? I also have a new distributor cap and rotor arm to fit. Next up would be distributor body, ECU and then maybe injectors I suppose?

Can anyone suggest what is most likely to be the cause? Otherwise I can see me replacing everything and still being in the same position.

Thanks very much!

Could b a million issues but this sounds like the ignition amp is letting you know that is is about to expire. If you change it then use the correct heat sync white compound so it can pass its heat to the body. Also if you are about the change the cap and rotor arm then get the pukker black Lucus ones as the others are generally false economy fella yes

If it sounds like rapid bursts of machine gun fire AND combined with juddering, it's time to sell the car. I'll take it off your hands for 3K. Only joking,HA HA.

I would change all the electrical stuff you have access to, with good quality components, then take it for a rolling road tune. They will be able to pin point any problems and save you changing expensive parts unnecessarily. Basic rolling road costs around £100 but you know it's done properly. Plus of course anything else they may need to replace.

Misfiring eh? Machine gun?

From the symptoms you would have fitted in well on the Tunnel Run last weekend ;^)

One last thing if you have a rev limiter, disconnect it, they can go wrong.

hi Ian

Like always could be a few things but my experience with the a coil problem left me stranded (the one and only time i might add)

Was something so simple, was told to change/beef up the earth strap from the fixing bolts on the coil bracket to the chasis.

Worked for me.......you never know something simple and really cost free.

Also check the 20am fuse make sure it contacting/clean.

best of luck

How about buying a Tuscan and a Wedge? Best of both worlds!

I'm afraid the actual Tuscan I was after is gone, and though there are quite a few out there, the cheap ones are poor, and the expensive ones are expensive. A Wedge is always a possibility, especially if one comes along good, original and rare. We'll see what happens. the search goes on.

When the car starts to miss fire under light load at 30 to 40 if you press on the throtal a little dose it go away and if you really put your foot down dose it pink, make a tinkle noise under acceleration?
Do you get the missfire at all under light load general crusing 60 70.....
To me it sounds like the dizy its self is where the fault is not the amp, leads, plugs or coil, i had a similer prob a few years ago and the dizy was not advancing the timming correctly with the vacum connected, try driving the car with vac disconnected and see if it goes, if so dizy beggered and needs a rebuild to sort out, they all fail at some point just the rover V8 can hide a lot of ignition faults that a crypton tuner with show up.

The good news with symptoms like that - the fault is a big one.

Some basic tests are in order.

First I would do is to run the engine at night and look for any stray sparks...

Another is to remove dizzy cap and check the carbon button is OK .. look for signs of arching

Check wiring to coil / dizzy etc ... it could be a poor connection.

I'm sure others will suggest more

I think its fair to say that the more gas I give it the worse it gets, although I have never tried flooring it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice - much appreciated!
