Hi all,

Since a few weeks I've become a Wedge (280i) owner. Always loved the shape and character of the car.
Sadly though I won't be driving the car any time soon on the road, it needs quite a lot of TLC as it stood outside for quite a few years and I don't have the time to work on it yet. But as soon as I have bit of time I'll start working on it. Should be in a month or 2. ASAP next year I want to pass the MOT.
I was wondering if somebody has a spare TVR Wedge book for sale or to download, so I could read already important stuff. Should I read other
books as well? I'm also looking for is a front window (is there any alternative?), mine is completely cracked and I noticed the fuel cap is missing. I'll need those parts at least to pass MOT.

Many thanks,

Gert

Hi and welcome to the wedge madhouse..You would be wise getting yourself a Ford capri mk3 haynes manual, Its best to keep an eye out for the wedge manual on Fleabay as they are fairly expensive but do come up from time to time..As far as front windscreens are concerned there is a guy on here called Paul..(I think) who has the profile name of Glassman and he is able to supply and fit..Also i believe Auto-glass has some in stock, They might be obtainable via insurance once you are mobile..Fuel caps are a bit harder to find now as they were originally from British motorcycles and were made by Ceandess..You will need a non-vented type as the fuel system is a closed loop type!..You could always purchase a fuel filler neck and cap but make sure the neck is 2"..Hope this helps..Cheers...Ziga

I was going to buy a S/H copy of the bible, but they tend to go for silly money (£30ish),I bought a brand new one from Steve Heath for £35.

Ford Granada Mk2 manual for the engine and gearbox and front suspension, Jaguar XJ6/ XJS manual for the differential and rear brakes, electrics are easy enough for any competent auto-electrician to understand - and even the official TVR wiring diagrams aren't always right.

Welcome to wedgehood! I only joined the madhouse a few weeks ago with a 280i too. I got fed up looking at the bible going for the new price so I just bought it new, arrived today smile it's a good read but I think the Haynes is also a good investment. It all costs but it's cheaper than a mechanic and at least you know your bible will hold its value like your car smile

Thanks already for all good advice.
I found the bible on Amazon as well but only shipping in the UK, same problem with various fleabay selelrs, who only want to send it within the UK.
In Belgium MOT is much more strict than it is in the UK, so I need a new screen and fuel cap to be able to pass MOT. So I'll contact the "Glassman" ;-) thnx all. I can use all good advice, I'm not the best mechanic, but happy to learn.
Are there any cheap mods to get a bit more power or shall I say to get back the original power out of the engine?

Hi....MORE POWER from a V6 280i......Well if you have a few months to sit and read my history then you will see its not an easy task...However there are some things worth getting checked to start with..

1. The valve clearances make quite a big difference so make sure they are set according to the book values.
2. Have someone check the compression on each cylinder.
3. Have the oil and spark plugs changed.

A V6 colognes should be around 150bhp and about 160lbsft of torque, However some of these figures can vary due to wear and tear.

There are some restrictions on the cologne one of which is the Air intake box, If yours is standard then it will be pulling in hot air from the radiator, This can be remedied in different ways..

1. Buy a 3" 90 degree plastic drain pipe fitting and warm it with a heat gun very carefully and manipulate one end to the oval shape of the airbox inlet, Then secure with duct tape and then foil tape over that to prevent the duct tape from becoming un-stuck, You should then be able to feed a flexible air intake pipe from the front nosecone mesh to the 3" opening and secure in the same way with the tape, You can then either use a K&N replacement filter inside the air box or remove it but retain the edge of the old filter as a seal..(Cut the paper out) and then fit a K&N cone filter onto the end of the flexible pipe in the nosecone, You might need a small metal sleeve to join the pipe to the filter,Use good jubilee clamps..Then secure the filter with a cable tie to something that wont move..This is very fiddly and the filter will need to be checked and cleaned regularly.

2. Have the air box housing which sits underneath the fuel metering head made from stainless steel with a modified front intake collar but it must be 3" or you will restrict the intake.
You can then remove the big part of the filter box.
I will post some pics of this once i have sorted through my pictures, The first option is the easiest.

3. Buy a sprintex supercharger kit from me... wink

Thnx for the info.

I wasn't aware there are SC kits available for the Cologne engine. I've heard about Capri engines with turbo, when I was still a young boy ;-), but never about an SC. Did you lower the compression on your engine?

There was a bolt-on-kit designed by power engineering in the mid-late 80's for the Ford Sierra 4x4i which had the v6 cologne 2.8i...The kit was designed to run on a standard engine and the boost level was fixed to 5-6psi max which meant no lowering of compression was needed, However a good rebuilt engine and good quality gaskets are a must, You will also need to upgrade the cooling system, Fuel reg, Brakes, UJ's and trailing arm bushes...You will also need to fit an electric power steering pump unless you have a manual rack..And cut a small section from the O\S body shell..(RHD).

I did all this and it cost in excess of 4K...If you click onto my name you will see what it looked like..It made me do this...

Unfortunately due to my lack of patience i drove it over 200 miles without attending to the cooling issue and the fuel was very rich which caused bore wash and then a ring to stick to the cylinder at 100mph..Whoops i meant KMH...biggrin..So i have now had another engine fitted and have taken the blower off...
This is my engine now..

Now there is a big gap...(Bottom left)....frown

My advice to you would be to save up for a V8....Or the other alternative is to have the colojgne rebuilt to a 3.5 spec...Or fit a cosworth engine...Or If you are like me..Quite large around the belt department then shedding a few pounds will help tremendously...hehe...Cheers...Ziga

PS: I forgot to say that if you type into youtube TVR TASMIN 280i Supercharged you will see mine...As it was the only one in existence.

Welcome !!

Just to add to Zig's comments... I made an aluminium 'sheild' for my air intake, so that engine picks up cold air from around the outside of the rad. Personally I reckon it's easier than part melting a drain pipe, but hey, they are both working solutions.
I can [just] get mine off to check the filter !

(by the way, get a K+N filter, they flow better than paper ones)

For engine swaps....

If you have an earlier 2.8, the chassis is very narrow at the back, and a Cossie 2.9 is then a real squeeze. Later Chassis is designed around V8 so is a little wider. Looking at photos shows there were actually quite a lot of chassis changes in the engine bay to get the Rover in !

The early ones did look a bit like that but weren't lockable!

Any chance you have a picture from your intake at hand, please? Just to make it a bit more visible for me. A part number of the K&N would be great as well.

Mr Ziga, just read your topic, great stuff! I'm too inexeperienced to do all what you have done. Hats off. I can't put a V8 in the car as I won't be able to pass MOT any more here in Belgium. But a Cosworth sounds more tempting, as it will remain the same 6cyl engine in another guise, that would be possible. We'll see, first I need to get this Tiv back on the road and we'll go from there.
Thnx all for all the good advice!

Thnx already guys for all the usefull info.
I started to work on the car last week and found out that all nuts and bolts are really rusted... My car has been standing in wet condition for a very very long time, poor car :-( At least it's with a better owner now. Most of the bolts snap when power is apllied to them.

I found out already that I need the folowing parts:

- Thermostat (Ford Capri found that on the forum)
- Radiator any one an idea which type it is? I found this text on the current radiator; Ford 06390 but can not find this reference on the net
- front window (must not be new)
- seats. The seats that are in now are not the original ones and were only attached with 2 bolts on nowel drilled holes :-( Are the seats from a FHC the same as for the DHC?
- interior carpet set I think I will make my own, unless somebody has a cheap address?
- new plastic window (will have this fixed at a local tent repair shop)

Please let me know if you are able to help me out with any of the parts or if you can give me any good advice, don't hesistate.
Just to show you all how badly my Tiv is in need for restoration; a picture from the plates that hold the seatbelt covers:
