Is the engine Hotwire or Flapper? I had a similar problem on a Hotwire once and the problem was the stepper motor. All it needed was cleaning out to make it work properly. Sometimes they pack up altogether and need replacing.

Have you tried starting with car with a little bit of throtal to see if the car is starved of air or it could be the temp sensor but if it has a prob it would cause rough running, when it fires up does it smell richer than normal.

For flapper when starting, fuel pump only runs when starter motor is being turned. You could try pressurising the fuel system before you operate the starter by pushing the flap back. If fuel pressure is low (fuel pump on the way out?) then this could cause poor starting.

For several years, I've been meaning to install a shrouded switch in the cabin to run the fuel pump before cranking from cold. Apathy wins though.

Mine primes the fuel system for a couple of seconds when turning the ignition on, prior to cranking, and I'm fairly sure that the flapper I had on the car when I bought it did the same.
