I put some petrol in and then could smell it under the car.
Turns out that the gasket on the fuel sender on the right hand tank is seeping slightly and so I ended up pumping some of the fuel out to get it below the level of the sender.
Anyone know what the gasket is off and where I can get one, and whether it can be changed with the tank in place?
Looks like it held in place with 6 of 6mm nuts.
There are some on ebay for Smiths sender units that may be the right one.

Are you sure it is the sender gasket failing? Usually Wedges have a problem of the filler neck rubber joint to the tank. That is where they usually leak when tank is full of fuel. Petrol when leaking can spread and look as though it's leaking elsewhere. The sender unit gasket is quite easy to get hold of and is a standard size I believe used on mini tanks etc. but you can get the correct one from either RT Racing or David Gerrald I believe. Also use red hermetite with the new gasket to make a good seal.

You could just get some suitable gasket material in sheet form and cut one out... you then have the material for future issues elsewhere wink

I just replaced my sender from David Geralds (that brought it along to BBWF for me)and they gave me a free gasket -
so they definitely have them (although maybe not free unless you buy the sender as well)

David Gerald supplied one for only a couple of pounds. All fixed now and can confirm that the sender unit comes out without removing the petrol tank. Old gasket was very perished.

I made one from a small sheet of gasket paper, which you can buy from auto shops. A few minutes work with a Stanley knife and a hand drill (for the bolt holes) and problem fixed.
