Hi, i wondered how rare power steering is on wedges or when they brought it in as my B reg 84 280i has power steering fitted but its not fitted on my other 82 and 83 wedges.

Don't think it was even an option on first wedges, and then probably an option, but it seemed to get more common as time went on.
I think most of the V8 versions got it -perhaps it was standard by then ?

83 wedges - that's quite a collection!

But seriously even by '85, it's maybe half and half, I have had one with and one without (both V8).

'84 280i without, '86 350i without and '89 400se with. I would say it's definitely worth having on the cars with 8" wide wheels (or more)

1985 V8 without, something else to go wrong.

Would be useful for parking in tight spaces though

350i built in 1986, no pas but 'standard': lsd, a-frame and uprated/large version of the half shafts.
Not so bad on the move and think TVRs were never made for parking.

Must say not ideal for drifting without pas to catch it at the right time. But they were not intended to be used like that anyway. The wedge always wanted to go around corners at silly speeds and not drift mostly whistle It probably carried the highest speeds and not slide at all, or I have no talent to drift at all perhaps.
Still a lot of fun trying driving and learning what the beast is like under those circumstances, which was the objective.

A steering thread, great, I have a question.........
The 400se which my sx started out as has power steering it looks like it the supra/ Tvr unit, is this correct?
It doesn't seem to have any bushes like the ford unit, it looks to me that there two struts on the chassis coming forward that the rack is bolted hard bolted to, 2 in front and 2 behind, is this correct or should there be rubber bushes there?
Cheers
Adam

The PAS rack is bolted directly to the chassis at 4 points, no rubbers involved. If there were, the hydraulic action would try to slide the rack sideways instead of turning the wheels...

Thanks guys your a mine of information seems they were an option at least on the earlier cars, personally i like the power steering on my wedge for low speeds it helps the arms when parking but its ok without also as with normal driving there dosn't seem much difference anyway.

What made the biggest difference on my 280 was doing the bulkhead bearing and getting rid of the horrid plastic bush.
This made a huge difference at parking speeds.

(this mod was on Wedgepages, I think there's a thread here somewhere...)
