First near stranding and nursing home
Discussion
Well I knew something was up when she really did not want to start - massive amount of cranking, strong fuel smell - finally spluttered into life with foot on floor after long cranking.
All good on journey to mums house. 2 hours later started first turn....then died after about a minute and would not restart. Pulled coil lead and left it dangling on plenum to check spark - yellow but jumping about 1cm. Could smell lots of fuel so clamped the fuel pipe to starve it then finally started but if left to idle would die straight away.
Cue "difficult" drive home left foot braking to keep revs up at junctions but still stalled a couple of times.
It seems like when you lift off the engine goes into a massive idle swing from nearly dying to 1000rpm to nearly dying and then after a good few cycles settles down.
Anyone want to buy a really pretty, very clean chassis 390SE needing minor tweaking?!
Where's Zigga? I need cheering up with tales of first long V8 drive outs!

smash, don't worry I know exactly how you feel mate with all my recent problems with my 390 too.
Just a thought as your probelms sound similar to mine, check the vaccum pipe from the fuel pressure regulator to the plenum, it has to be air tight at both ends with no splits in the pipe or anything. I am only suggesting this as this was the problem with mine, bought a new bit of vaccum pipe for 49p. Now running better than ever (done lots of miles today) what with the new plugs, cts, dizzy cap, rotor arm that I bought to try and fix it
Good luck mate and stick with it

Don't give up mate!…Yes its a pi55er but could be a simple fix!..Check the coil, Leads, Rotor arm, Plugs..Not sure how to check the ignition amplifier but might be worth checking…What ECU's are on the 390SE?…ZigaThe 390's have the standard 4cu ECU.
smash, also check your throttle pot settings, should be 0.30 - 0.35v at idle (ignition on) progressively rising to about 4.3v at WOT.
Check all earth's, check the ECU multiplug is in the ECU nice and tight, check the AFM multiplug is in the AFM nice and tight, check the power resistor connections etc.
You'll get there mate, no worries.......

Stuffed me up one night with over fuelling. Pot must have thought I had lead boots on when I was just trying to tick over it had wandered so far. Flatbed home and that was a mare.smash, also check your throttle pot settings, should be 0.30 - 0.35v at idle (ignition on) progressively rising to about 4.3v at WOT.

Just had horrible feeling....when I changed the thermo sensor I flushed the system as it looked a bit crudy and didn't have any apparent anti freeze. So it's had fresh water and anti freeze and whne it's difficult to start and eventually does catch there is a fair bit of whitish smoke.
Wondering if I could've done a head gasket somehow

I replaced the ecu sensor on a whim thinking it might be related to my part throttle probs - turns out the original was fine!
TBH not necesarily saying it didn't have anti freeze - just that the water looked crudy redish brown and didn't have any anti freeze colour to my eyes.
I've run the car like this throughout my ownership....since September when I bought it!
