My 350 did not but the 400 needs it. Should suck it back in.

Think I may remove it as it stops the bonnet from shutting properly. And have a new radiator and fan so probably not needed

Try a smaller bottle, some systems do need them. Otherwise it will spit a bit out and you will be topping up often.

It may not work because you need a good seal between the plastic mouth of the standard reservoir and the metal cap because it will otherwise suck air and the water won't go back into the tank.

When new the pipe just ran down the inside of the inner wing and dumped the water on the road so as to not alarm the owners.

The bottle on its own will be useful for you to keep track of the water that is expelled - but don't expect it to go back.

In a standard system the top-up point on the reservoir is designed to be at the point where the expansion of the water at the hottest point fills the space above and no more. So no fluid should be expelled unless there is a fault in the system, this is a useful diagnostic indication. This would allow for the volume of the cooling system including the heater.

Of course TVR would have chosen the reservoir tank using other criteria (cheapness, availability, credit-line, fit etc.) so the correct relationship may not apply.

My 350 never had one. My 400 has one as original factory fitment. It is secured to a bracket that is mounted to the inner wing, next to the header tank.

Cheers Russ, I guess I'll try finding a smaller bottle or moving it until I know more.

I have a smaller bottle than the one you have and it fits under the expansion bottle, its actually an mgb windscreen washer bottle. Mine spews it out and sucks it back in, originally it didnt have the second bottle so it spewed it out onto the road which always scared me as I thought something worse had happened. My opinion is that the whole set up is s***e no other rover v8 has this set up so why tvr went down this route is behond me.

Not exactly the best is it. I raised the expansion tank an inch or so and improved things, re arranged the and minimised the pipe work some what, got the swan neck as low as I could.

Now on a new expansion tank with a bigger volume and the catch tank is not getting sucked back as it was before. I did have a curry sauce bottle as an catch tank, maybe I need to put that back.

I added one to my 350i and the 400SX had one as standard (washer bottle again).

Yes you need s special pressure cap too to take advantage of it. Like the ones I have been selling (got the last few lest now). They have a little plunger underneath the internal cap and an extra seal on the outer one:

These bottles catch and save coolant rather than dumping it, but the need for them is generally because of gas in the system, which may come about with a small head gasket leak, or if you get stuck in traffic and it boils a bit.

A fully working system even plumbed by TVR won't dump into the catch tank normally, they are there for occasional hiccups.

Ah, didn't think to check what cap came with the tank apart from the pressure rating.

The old set up would spit a bit out and suck it back in as it cooled. Not much as a rule, around a good mug full.

A mugful?? Jeff you shouldn't be drinking it - that's glycol, only present in antifreeze and Austrian wine... it won't do your kidneys any good at all!

Hear how they got caught? Tax man was asking the antifreeze company why they were flogging loads in the summer, antifreeze makers told them it was sold to the grape crushers down the road, they go and ask grape crushers why they need so much anti freeze.....
