Ok, so im toying with changing my westfield for a wedge, looking at a 390/400. I notice that there seem to be a wide variety of different styles of exhaust: single pipe, twin exit, side exit, twin pipes. Is this on account of aftermarket systems, or was tvr really that diverse? And importantly, is there any reason to pick one over the other in terms of sound. I do love the idea of side pipes😍

By the time the 390/400SE came around, they'd more or less standardised on one layout, it's usually the aftermarket that makes different versions to the owners' fancy.
For the V8, the usual arrangement is two unequal-length manifolds (to offset the joints) feeding into a single centre box that is effectively straight-through, with a perforated tube through it wrapped in wire wool... hence the largely bass note.
From there the pipe exits as a 2.5" (I think), goes up over the nearside driveshaft, then crosses the car under the boot floor and exits on the right.
Some cars have a single and some a twin outlet but it's only twin at that point. Some have an exit each side but whether that's due to a split in the single pipe or two separate pipes from the main silencer is down to whoever built it (or maybe what the first owner asked for).

Some variants include a silencer across under the boot floor.

Earlier variants included a system (on the V6, I don't think the V8 had it) that used two boxes mounted one under each seat, then two pipes over the driveshafts and either straight out the back or with another pair of silencers under the boot floor.

If you look in the parts manual there are quite a few different factory layouts.

But then the old mild steel exhausts must have all rotted away by now - owners replacing with stainless either copy the old layout or change a few things - resulting in the big variety you see now.

My V6 has the pair of 'sideways' boxes under the seats. Fits quite neatly except there is a burned hole under both seats- whoever put the system on (before I got it) mounted the boxes too close to the floor....

It also has rear silencers, but pipes just before there are so low they hit the ground first, and are scraped and bodged to buggery
