Hi guys. Close to starting my 350se 3.9 after the rebuild. Can anyone tell me what approx the timing degree BTDC should be at 1000rpm and should the vacuumed pipe be connected whilst setting?

Also something else not mentioned in the manuals but on the car, was a couple of grubby old possible large ballast resistors. Any idea what they are for, I'm assuming they are for the wipers or heating?

Thanks in advance Kev

I can only quote what I am running which is 8 degrees at idle at 1000 rpm it's about 12. The two resistors I think are the dimmer resistors for the dashboard.

Thought they were for the heater blower? Really should pull a leg off one day to check.

Big resistors are for the dash dimmer, usually they are damaged so you have OFF, OFF & ON rather than OFF, Dim, ON. I fitted mine in the bin....

I thought the tickover was a bit lower at 800rpm.

8 degrees is what I usually use and I just kink the vacuum pipe when I take the reading.

If you have pinking under load - a bit less advance is needed.

8 Degrees and 800rpm (ish) here too. Mine will actually idle reasonably smoothly down to about 650 rpm but the oil light starts flickering by then...

Sorry my tickover is at 800 rpm ish, but at 1000 rpm the advance is about 12 degrees compare to 8 at idle..
