Does anyone know the thread type and size on a late V8 Wedge(my 350SE 3.9). I have found someone who can custom make a gear knob but needs to know the size and type of tread on the gear stick. Is it Metric, UNF, UNC or BSF and what is the thread size? Also, how deep into the gear knob should he drill? I would be most grateful if anyone has done this before or knows the details. Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Hi Tony....I have just checked the one that my wood turning friend took dimensions from...More so the internal measurements..Its one that was on poppy when i bought her and looked like a TVR original type..I have just tried an M8 bolt on the thread and its a good tight fit, i think the thread length was around 1.5" and there was a slightly wider recess that fitted over some of the gear lever..I'd say a good 2-21/4" overall...My knob is quite long so there was plenty of meat to screw into...:thumb up:

I have just noticed...Look on the back of it and it looks like two eyes and a nose...Actually it looks a bit like ET, Especially with the lines on the neck part....laugh

Hi Zig. Are you saying it's an 8mm Metric thread about 1.5" drill depth into the knob? I have to give him accurate measurements otherwise when it comes back it won't fit.

Right i just had a proper measure up of the internal of the old gear knob and its...

11-12mm Dia x 1.1/4" length Recess which sits over the gear lever.
6mm (M6)..Not 8 sorry..Thread x 2" Length.
Total = 3.1/4 into the gear knob.

Cant you check it before you ask him to make it or give him the old one?...I used this while i was waiting...Not very attractive but surprisingly comfortable and easier to open up the gears... smile

Just had mine done on the wee beastie. It looks 8mm but its actually 5/16th UNC. If in doubt count the threads per inch. If its 18 threads its 5/16th

Thanks for the info gents. I can't give him the old knob because it's one of these after market self tap one's. However, 5/16 UNC makes sense. I will count the threads per inch and confirm that way. Thanks again to all.

Place a nylon sleeve into the gear knob and allow it to self thread?

Remember having a phone conversation years ago when I just met Carol with one of the lads from work.

Along the lines of........ Is it Male/Female???? Tit/Bush....Later on we where talking flanges/Nipples.

I remember hanging up and Carol was sat there gobsmacked, obviously thinking what have I got myself into here....

Since explained terminology.

I managed to remove the existing knob off the gear stick with great difficulty.
It was one of these triple side allen key type screws but they were a bit rusty and there isn't much room around it to work in. Still it's off now and I'm having a new one made to order with the correct thread. The guy who is making the knob is sending me a 5/16 inch unc nut to try on before he taps the thread in the alloy knob. Hopefully it'll fit. The knob I ordered is a two inch diameter mirror polished alloy.
