Hi Gents

My gearbox is a bit crunchy and I've been told that a better quality oil or different type of oill
Can sometimes rectify or at least improve smoothness,
What's the best for this?

I was told Mobil 1 synthetic with moly slip additive. I'll check the grade when I walk past the empty container in 20 minutes.

It was Mobil 1 fully synthetic 0w40 That was recommended with moly slip gear box additive. I also flushed the box twice with 50/50 mix of white spirit and cheap gear oil. It does seem much smoother especially from cold.

I've been running Mobil 1 0W40(and did the flushing cocktail) for over 20k miles.

Better when cold, and also when very hot, the crunchiness stays away. Go for it!

Not too bad but I would get 2m of pipe so you can put one end in the box and have a funnel on the other end in the engine bay. Then you can stand up and stick in 2.5l then continue adding until it starts to drip out.

I agree with Adam. I used about 4' of nylon clear hose and suitable funnel and topped up from near the clutch master area so it was quick and easy to fill. I folded an old sheet to ensure I didn't spill anything in the engine bay. Also I pre-mixed the cheap gear oil and white spirit before I poured it in so it ran down easily.

I fill up to the hole as the 1" thing relies on the gearbox being level and the car is usually jacked up at a jaunty angle.

Rik, make sure you get new crush washers for both engine and gearbox drains in advance of draining down. Also thoroughly clean the metal swarf off the drain plug, which is magnetic. I was a little surprised how much was present but after the second flush no more "bits" were washed down. I flushed the engine, gearbox and diff as well as thoroughly flushing the entire cooling system and heater matrix.
