400SE oil cooler ?
Discussion
Does it really need it ?
Later V8 TVR's don't have them do they and I just noticed the Gredge doesn't have one either. The pipework is a mess and on mine leaks throwing oil into the alternator belt so I'm considering adding the oil cooler + stat etc to the now growing pile of bits at the back of the garage that won't be going back on I know the best way would be to fit an oil temp gauge but I would have thought someone else would have done it the science !

I suppose to a large extent it depends when and how you use the car. If you use it in high ambient temps (say 80+) and drive it hard, then yes, I would keep the cooler and sort out the leaks. Definitely keep it if the car is tracked. Plus a future buyer would expect it to be there as a standard fitment. On my (admittedly tweaked) 4.3, it's not difficult to see oil temps of 90deg in the summer. On track in 85+ deg ambient temps I've seen the oil temp nudging 130 deg, but I do use either Motul 300V Comp or Fuchs Race Pro R, which I know can take extreme temps.Later V8 TVR's don't have them do they and I just noticed the Gredge doesn't have one either. When I was doing the "Gredge" conversion I considered fitting a small after market 4 row oil cooler and associated oil thermostat but when I looked at the 500 Griff's and Chims they did not have or need them so left it. I have kept an eye on he oil temp and it has not been an issue to date. As already mentioned if you are wanting to track the car then possibly fit one otherwise, its not needed in my opinion. Its just another set of plumbing and equipment to go wrong I think

High ambient temperature did TVR expect global warming to kick in sooner due to all the v8's they sold. Seriously though I think I'll take it off and add an oil temp gauge, if it does start to get a bit warm on I can refit it but look at a better way of arranging the plumbing, I reckon it's possible to half the length of the pipework.

I had a similar thought when I took mine out...however opted to give it a damn good clean (it was in amazingly good condition as its well protected) and replumb with new pipes and all is nice and leakfree.
If you have a good cond. Rad then I would put it back in IMO. Just make sure you use oil lines. I got all mine from merlin Motorsport as most factors won't have that size...oh and always use good stainless clips, I used higrip as I've learned my lesson from using cheap ones!

Cheers Matt,
I think I may refit but put a bit more thought into the pipe runs and fittings used, for my last project I managed to squeeze the cooler, stat, plumbing and sandwich plate into pretty much zero space (Hose etc from Think-automotive)

This DID need all the cooling it could get... Turbo Diesel nutter job !

....and another oil cooler question, we removed the rad (and found a hole in it
) / fan and cooler last night and on my car the hoses for the cooler leave the filter through 90 degrees, connect to the oil stat, pass behind the rad, drop under the rad on the near side, then pass in front of the rad connecting to the cooler which is on the offside, so in a nutshell the hoses almost go right around the rad. Anyone else looked at this and thought WTF ????
First thought is to turn the cooler upside down and take the hoses around the offside of the rad and put the oil stat under what would be the slam panel vastly reducing the mess and length of hoses.
Any other ideas /comments ?
