Hi Peeps...I have my old rocker covers and the oil filler tube that the filler cap sits on needs to be removed...Dan taylor tried with a bar that fits inside...No joy..I have heated it up and soaked it in D-Block penetrating oil for the last few days but it won't budge..I know that alloy on alloy can have a certain amount of oxidisation but i shouldn't imagine there is any there..Any advice appreciated...Ziga

PS: I have also tried it in a vice ..No joy.

It's just screwed in, might have had some threadlock applied though...

Yeah i know mate but it won't budge..In fact i have two to remove and they are both the same...I don't want to mash up the alloy by locking it into a vice and turning the cover but it seems the only way...Cheers...Ziga

Heating makes it expand but is good for burning off any thread sealers. I wonder if putting it in the fridge might have the opposite effect before trying to undo it. Vice grips really are your best bet for maximum force but if they are bonded together over a long period, it could still be a problem. Wrap the tube section in a protective film before putting in vice. Make sure there is plenty lubrication and hope for the best.

Also, if you do put it in a vice, clamp it between two planks of wood to protect the alloy.

Chain/mole wrench combined...

Much better than a strap wrench. I have one I use for recalcitrant Citroen suspension spheres, you can borrow it next time we meet up... I'd put an old filler cap in while you heave on it to give the tube some strength.

I was working on the principle that Zig wanted to save and re-use the part; it's extremely unlikely to survive vices, chain wrenches and planks unscathed.
If you just need to get it out to replace with a blinging polished new one, carefully slit it lengthwise with a hacksaw blade up the bore...

I had the same problem. Brute force won the day. I put the filler itself in the vice, two bits of wood to protect the end of the cover. Stillson nipped up tight to the wood, extension bar and a lot of screaming and out it came. As wedg1e says there was some kind of thread lock on there.

Yes i do Ian...One is not mine and to replace they are £40...I think i will try the strap wrench and if not then planks and a heavy duty vice..And loads of.."C'mon you tw@t"...Hopefully will do the trick...Cheers...Ziga

Heat the lot up in the oven, then take it out and as quick as possible put ice cubes/crushed ice into the filler hole. The tube will then contract and that will be your opportunity to unscrew it.

Not that I've done this, mind.... just theory.

I have tried to do this job on many times zig and I have only ever managed to remove 1 and that was by soaking it in penetrating fluid then holding the rocker in a vice and using mole grips to turn it. Really took ages and if you find an easy quick way of doing it I would love to know.

An alternative would be to leave it on the car and run the engine up to full temperature, after a nice run it's all at 80-90C up there.

Make sure the filler cap is done up nice and tight.

Then spray freeze-it all over the stubby tube and undo with the filler cap - it should come off fairly easily. Freeze-it costs about £3 a can.

Hi Mate...

Well...
1. Its stuck on my old rocker cover and i would like to use it on my new ones...Plus it will free up a pair of covers if i detail them for someone else...Its also awkward to clean, Polish and detail them with it in place.

2. I have a pair to detail for someone else which also has the tube in....So two to remove, I have ordered a wrench strap to see if that can remove them as i will need something to do it if i offer a detailing service to others....
