On the way to work today a strange fault occurred, when giving it some beans there was a hiccup and then it started running funny - the engine won't idle at all now.

It drives OK above about 1500rpm on medium throttle openings and got me to work OK.

At first I thought the air intake hose had popped off the plenum (happens occasionally after a front-fire) but it seems to be there in place so it's a bit of a mystery.

But I suppose at lunchtime I'll be checking:

- ECU multiplug isn't loose
- Air hoses (again)
- New plug leads are all on OK
- TPS is running smoothly especially at the bottom of travel
- AFM voltage in/out

Any other ideas gratefully received.... hopefully it will get me home too despite the fault.

;^) But who would buy such an unreliable machine???

Anyhow, problem solved in 5 seconds - this time when I opened the bonnet I noticed that the EAV hoses had come off, they are the only ones that are not jubilee-clipped to the plenum, the extra boost this morning as I was joining the M11 popped the thing off at both ends (!) So the unmetered air was ruining the idle.

Luckily the hose hadn't decided to drop on the ground as I drove along.... I'll be popping some clips on that tonight.

Webcam under the bonnet to monitor fan operation, wide angle lense to monitor hoses falling off. Although Wedge engine bays appear to be hostile places for delicate modern tech devices.

How about an endoscope in the sump plug to watch the crank going around? ;^)

Well I found a couple of spare stainless jubilee clips and wanged them on - the same hose came off twice on the way home now it's got a taste for it... Also cleaned off the oily ends to give it a little more purchase.

So - let's see what goes wrong tomorrow!

As for the cutting out problem I think that's either ignition or the injectors turning off because the engine just goes dead for 1-3 seconds. So I shall rig up the ignition tell-tale lamps plus two more for the injector banks, to monitor things from the driving seat.

The 280i used to cut out on a LH turn and that was due to the battery being unsecured and the earth lead being loose...Just a thought...Ziga
