After a few days of trying to find a battery small enough, powerful enough and within my budget with no success me and Big wooly decided to relocate the battery to the boot and run the main cables through the car to the point where the battery would have been situated. Thought I would share a few images to make you all jealous smile no more limits to battery size, the battery I've used is for a diesel car and turns the engine over a lot easier than the gel/gam battery that was fitted to the car.

At some point yes zig, paintwork is pretty tired all over it so that's the last of my worries for now, just hope it passes it's m.o.t!

Hi littlewooly, my 280 is a 1982 on a y plate; same as yours, but my battery is on the passenger side and in a bigger space than yours appears to have been in. What have you on that side? Were battery positions not the same on 280's??

My A-reg also has the battery on the passenger side. That space on the driver's side accommodate the extension tank (ex Capri injection)

What's the reasoning behind it's relocation, not finding one to fit?

Mine is a 280i drop head on a Y plate 1982, I have no space like this on the passenger side,. Yes waynester I tried for 3 days to find a battery small enough to fit the space, powerful enough to spin a v6 over and within my tight budget biggrin now I'm not restricted to battery size, and this battery spins the engine over very easily as it's meant for a diesel engine.

What i realised when i owned it was that the dedicated space for the battery is actually tapered...I found a suitable battery that fitted one end but not the other..
Toby...The electric power steering uses most of the juice...If you ever need to swap it back to mechanical then i have both the Montego and the Capri pumps with brackets..

PS: That's the emptiest i have ever seen the boot in the 3 years i owned her...Weird how the 350 now has a choco-bloca boot..Although i did remove the spare wheel this morning and took some tools out...Feels much quicker now..biggrin

Just a quick word of warning though, get the terminals in the boot covered. It wouldn't take much for something in the boot to arc the terminals and start a fire.

Will do, boot is empty at the moment, don't tend to carry anything in there most of the time, only the roof when it's off! Need to find some sort of cover to go over it or make something up.
