I've had the 280i for a year now and just have not had time or space to do anything with it, we moved house in December so I've got a garage and workshop now (although the workshop isn't finished yet) so space isn't an issue, somehow though I seem to have even less time than before! It would appear if the car is ever going to get on the road again I'm going to have to pay for some of the jobs to be done away from home and try and find time to do bits and bobs myself.
Top of my personal list is to get the fuel system renewed with new fuel lines, pump etc as the last time we did anything to the car we discovered the lines had all perished and cracked.
So my question to you guys is roughly how much would a refresh of the fuel system on an 84 280i cost and does anyone know anywhere in Cambridgeshire I could get it done?

Fuel pipe will be about £3 per meter, you will need 6m to be safe, and changing them should take you abut 2 hours at the most.
Better off getting a box of jubiee clips and change all of the pipes around the fuel pump while you are at it.
If its bee sat for a while then drain the fuel and 'store' it as its probably knackered, and look at the swirl pot area to see where to fit a new pre pump filter.
All in all, that should be it. the pre filter will stop any crap going into the mechanical injection system, and from there it should be easy to get going.
if you need any more information, message me with a number and Ill give you a call.

Hi mate...Talk to Steve at KMI petrol injection..Tell him Mark recommended you, He is very knowledge in all the components and can refurb the metering head and supply most of the bits, Although i think he cannot get the injectors anymore..Alternatively there are companies who you can send the old ones to for cleaning and testing but talk to Steve first..
The metering unit cost me £360 for a refurb...I think the accumulator new was £160...He can refurb the WUR...The plastic fuel lines can be bought as a kit but its not an easy job as they are heat pressed and have to be done properly as they are under high pressure..You CANNOT use normal rubber hose for this.
There was a mention about these on a Ferrari forum

I might be able to find a set as i have some and will ask the ford guy if he has the rest.
You are probably looking at around £600-800 for the entire system, Obviously you might be able to save some money on people donating parts they may have but the refurbing of parts is as is...I will have a look in my garage to see what i have...Cheers...Ziga

PS: You need to check that the fuel tank hasn't gone rusty also....This can be a bit of a pain so will cover this a bit later.

On the 280i racers, we got fed up with the troublesome and expensive components and bunged a carb on there.. a single twin choke. much cheaper, more reliable and more power..
saves a fortune on fuel pumps too, and doesnt need a hp one.
Now most people will be amazed to hear me suggesting carb ver fuel injection as but the 280i system is mechanical fi so the worst of both worlds imho. now if your talking efi :-)

This does intrigue me....saves a fortune on fuel pumps too, and doesnt need a hp one.

I was led to believe that with efi the 280 engine (maybe in a capri setup?) was about 10bhp less?
I was told upto 160bhp on mfi and upto 150 on efi (maybe this is wrong?)
Do you know what the power difference(s) are efi/mfi/carb?
Mine is currently running fine (no idea on its current bhp) but I'd be interested to know.

A limitation of CSI is that you cannot have vallve overlap.
This restricts the choice of camshaft to mild.(ish)
So while the stock figures of each car show 130 140 150 160 etc when it comes to tuning a nice big carb will do a better job than the CSI because the cam can be changed.
Porsche had the same problems with the 2.7 and soon ditched it. (For EFI)
Before a Porsche enthusiast comes along and says there were 2.7s with the old MFI systems, yes I know, but not many
most were the horrid CSI.jeff m2 said:

I have no plans to 'frig' with mine was just intruiged about the differences, if carbs "needs" a cam change to be better then no point anyway?

Thanks to all for the info.
