Hi all, the other week I stripped and re-gasketed the remote oil filter banjo. After assembly I left the oil filter off, topped up the two oil lines with a funnel to ensure they were both full all the way to the filter mount. I also filled the oil filter then quickly inverted it and screwed it on. No issues and the oil pump primed and oil pressure was there after 8 or 10 seconds. What I have noticed however is that the oil pressure light consistently takes maybe 5 to 6 seconds before it goes off, whereas before this work it was almost instantaneous.

The question is should the oil filter not be pre-filled so that it's full of air and therefore the pump has less work to do to get the oil moving and up to pressure?

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Is it the same oil filter? Some have anti-drain, some don't

Ouch, 8-10 seconds is a good while for crank bearings to be hammering around with no oil.
I prefer the old cordless-drill-on-the-oilpump technique myself.

Mine has always. Gone off as soon as started but the new one I put on recently (can't remember brand) and it takes a few seconds. Might change it...can you change the filter without taking all the oil out? If so I'll change too..

Always used the Mann ones unless anyone recommends different?

Thanks for the replies. Previous filter was indeed Unipart. New one is Malaysian filter from Rimmers so will change back to Unipart. Generally do people pre-fill their filters before fitting?

With a remote filter (filter is upside down, ie ports are facing down), filling the inlet and outlet pipes to the fitting seems to work for me, no meddling with the dizzy and save on the Vaseline.

Just to close this one off, I've bought and fitted the Unipart oil filter and all is well. The new filter as supplied from Rimmer was bone dry so obviously does not have a non-return valve, even though the filter was twice the price of the Unipart one. Lesson learnt - stick with Unipart!
