Hi Guys.

I have been enjoying driving the 350i for a few months now - just over 460 miles worth, my face is still aching from the amount of smiles wink

Since buying it some work has been done, listed below.... thanks to Mark / Chris for the email advice..

1- clutch master cylinder replaced - new dot4 fluid / bled and tested.
2- New alternator fitted as the previous one wasnt charging the battery.
3- full service done inc new plugs / VR1 oil etc...
4- steering adjusted to stop the front NS wheel rubbing the arch when on full lock to the right.

A few questions though as I am still getting use to the differences between this and the 280i.

It is running lumpy on tickover - I have to watch the revs till it starts warming up or it stalls. once warm it is fine and could tickover all day.
From what i understand it has an uprated cam but dont have any paperwork to accurately support this. not sure if this is a factor to the idling ?

Since the alternator has been changed, I have noticed a whine coming from the engine. Have spent a while listening to it and it seems to be coming from the air intake area.. it sounds like a flute combined with a resonance sound from a bell. have checked for air leaks and can't visably find any.

Also, during driving it since the service, when stopping in traffic or lights etc.. the revs drop right down and if I dont catch it time, engine cuts out. Didn't do this before the service so not sure what could be different other than the service items..

Any ideas to the above ?? the weather is looking good for the coming weekend so going to be under the bonnet hopefully sorting these niggles out. Will also try and record a vid of the engine whine and post up.

Thanks for the help guys.
Can't wait for the Beef Burger With Fries.. wink

Cheers
Dom

I have these rolling road pics from the previous owner.. can anyone advise what they are showing and why the different HP figures..

Hi Dom...Good to hear you are still smiling..What is your idle?..Its best around 980-1000rpm for the 350i...If you have a uprated cam then it will most certainly cause some cold idling issues..I think with uprated cams you will feel the power band at around 2500rpm kick in...Mine makes a really loud sucking noise through the K&N and sounds like turbo when you floor it..I think this is only down to the amount of air these engines pull in...Especially compared to the V6...Two more cylinders really do make a difference...cool

Hiya Mark.

The idle is around 1100. It seems there is no boost to performance at any given revs... it just pulls like a train throughout nice and smoothly. I have had comments from a mate who has a rover v8 Dax Cobra that it feels alot quicker than his from a standing start.

The noise from the Air filter does sound like a turbo as you say.. must say it's enjoyable but it is a different noise to the one ive noticed recently.

I wouldnt like to think im doing damage to it if I leave alone. especially not fully 'knowing' the car yet.

I will video the start up / idle at the weekend and post up.

the whine might be the belt slipping - is it worse if you switch all the lights on?

Thanks for the reply, As far as aware, the belt isn't slipping as it has just had new alternator - belt adjusted to suit.. I havent checked with lights on / fans going etc.. 1st thing on the to-do list for weekend wink
Also, I will check the belt again just to confirm.

I was thinking of buying a slightly shorter belt as the aternator is at the max of the adjusting arm, would like to relocate slightly lower with the shorter belt so there is less chance of impeller fowling on the bonnet heat matting which there are signs this has happended in the past.

Thanks.
Dom.

Stalling and rough idle sounds like an air leak somewhere.
Engine whine could be water pump bearings? Possible faulty alternator bearings? Alternator not aligned properly with engine pulley?

The 220BHP line is calculated HP at the crank, the 174-ish is as measured at the wheels. The really wiggly line is the air:fuel ratio across the rev range.

Thanks for the explaination..
Is that wiggly line normal then for the AFR - I would have thought it should be a smooth line relative to the rev range..

Oh yes.. convoy sounds a great idea - what time are you thinking of leaving Bristol and heading up to the Fest, what route do you think ?

Morning all.

Just thought I'd provide a small update..
Last night I decided to have a look at the symptoms again. Started the car and within couple of mins, the whine was back - I did film it and the whine is evident on film so will try to upload. There was no difference with the heater / lights on so kinda think it isn't the alternator or belt.

I removed the air filter to clean and also tightened up all the jubilee clips to see if any air leaks may be the cause..

Anyway, this morning, drove into work ( apologies to my neighbours if they are reading this) and the car performed great, no whine noise and no stalling every time i pull up to stop etc..

Whilst I'm happy at this, still a little stumped what could have been causing this over the last week or so.

Will keep you all posted.
Thanks
Dom

Hi mate...Next doors cat didn't climb into the air dam by any chance did it..(Poor bastid)..

NOTE: Whining normally comes from spoilt children and failing marriages..blah

Sometimes it can be the power steering pump...More noticeable when your stationary and full lock it...Might be able to tell once you upload the soundbite.....Ziga

Sounds like it was, as previously mentioned, a small air leak, the re-seating of pipes and tightening of clips may well have cured it. Drive it like you stole it for a few miles and see if all is well.

If the whine returns I would have a look at the alternator as it sometimes can be either a new one bedding in or a dodgy one sold to you.

Have you checked the extra air valve ?
This could be sticking or shut in the closed position which would cause it to run rough when cold ?
Also what is it idling at when warm ?
Could be a simple tweak of the idle screw would cure it ?
