On my series 1 350i both fuel/temp gauges are sitting hard on the stops . The temp sender is OK also the fuel gauge sender checks out OK I has checked all the earths I can find all seem OK .
Does any bod know if there is a voltage regulator/stabilizer hidden away in the dash as I'm running out of ideas on this one . Smiths gauges by the way

I was going to say that for the wedge originally I have no idea, but for Smiths gauges in most BL/Triumph clone cars, there WAS a voltage stabiliser. So if they are replacement Smiths units, it's possible there is one.

If they don't read at all, checking earths is probably as good a place as any to start.... do they light up with the side lights ? Not always, but pretty often they share the same earth return.

The instruments are often earthed using the outer sleeve of the bonnet release cable, there should be an earth strap from the bonnet catch to the engine/ chassis.

Yes they light up with the side lights. I have cleaned up the earth straps bonnet catch to engine and most others .
There is a daisy chain of earth straps going across the dash which dissapear by the passenger door but can't find where they end at the moment.
Some of the earlier tivs running smiths gauges do have regulators and I beileve the sd1rovers also had them.

I really need to get the fuel gauge working as here indoors wants to know where £170 squids worth of fuel has gone in the last few weeks been running rebuilt engine in and I don't want to run out not sure of consumption yet as running a holley carb on a v8d 3.9 with a few mods .

Stick a couple of gallon tanks in the boot in case you run out - and a pipe to fill her (I use a bit of old coolant hose). Get metal ones if you can!

I have exactly the same issue on my series 1 350 - in the box of spares that came with mine there is an old voltage regulator, but Im sure if its related to my car. I have started to take the dash out too so I will also try and take some pics

Early bay

Please post if u have a result when dash comes out.

Interestingly I have a motorhome based on a fiat ducato chassis and its a well documented problem for both gauges to wander and give false readings on the fiat forum nine times out of ten its put down cheap and faulty fuses ....well it is Italian after all?

Cheers mike

You may just have to get the dash out and test the connections. At least will confirm if the gauges are dead.
